Small and light yet works great on the stakes for setting and pulling. The claw could also be useful for leveling off a campsite.

Hammer is super lightweight and durable. Easy to pack and looks cool. Brought it with me on my Havasupai Falls hike.

Good, light weight hammer for tent stakes. Good size striking head so you won't be missing the stake head. I wish that it came with a cover for the head of the hammer as the claw portion is very sharp and it could tear my gear bag. For now, I'm wrapping the hammer with a rag to protect my bag.

I bought mine on a deep sale. That's the only time I'd recommend it.

Great tool. Has enough weight to drive stakes well but it is light enough to backpack with it. The claw is also the perfect size for pulling my stakes out of the ground.

The claw part is quite sharp, and exposed. The hammer should have a cover that slips over the claw. Otherwise great.

I previously scoffed at the idea of getting this hammer, assuming I could always just find a rock. It turns out, there's a hand-sized rock shortage on a lot of trails and at many campsites, and a typical toolkit hammer isn't going to work on your stakes. A hatchet was also an interesting idea, but the prospect of accidentally cutting my fingers off was a bit off-putting (and the weight distribution of the hatchet really didn't facilitate hammering). In terms of hammering, this hammer does it well: it's light, the weight distribution is right, and it drives stakes into solid ground *very* well. The prongs on the back are perfect for pulling out stakes (which the cord on the bottom could also be used for if your stakes don't have cords), and would make for a great trowel. Also, you could probably use it as a meat tenderizer if you really wanted to, but that's probably unsanitary.

Yes it is light weight! Drives and Pulls stakes, Check! Could be used in Self Defense if ever needed (hopefully not)! AND....it is the fastest Cat Hole Digger of All TIME! If you have ever tried to dig a Cat Hole in hard ground with that ultralight aluminum thing, you know what I mean. Flip that hammer and use those claws to dig a cat hole to speck ( 6" deep and as big as you feel necessary) in less than 30 seconds! The MSR Tent Stake Hammer is part of my base weight for good!!

I know MSR is not in the business of trying to build a better mouse trap, but they definitely built the best balanced utility hammer for the hiker/camper. You wont brake builders with it, but is durable enough for about everything else on the trail. This is a great addition to my kit.

I bought one of these last year for my husband; it's so amazing, it was a "must buy" for my daughter who is now camping on her own. Lightweight, perfectly balanced, and most importantly makes easy work of stake pounding in any type of soil.

The packing of the items are not protected enough. I bought 12pcs of hammers, But the hammers got scratches and dents.

Sea kayaking isn't so weight restricted as climbing or backpacking, but things still add up. I try to bring items that can serve multiple functions, so devoting space and weight to such a specific tool was not an intuitive choice. But this stake hammer has the feel of a well-crafted tool and does that one job so incredibly well that I'm just going to have to find other uses to justify its place in my gear bag. The balance is perfect for what it's made to do. The size and weight are the minimum necessary to accomplish the task and still be, well, a hammer.

They all laughed at me for taking this on a 7 day trek across the sierras until we got to a camp and there weren't any rocks. Suddenly, EVERYONE at the campground wanted to use my hammer to get their stakes in. The hammer isn't necessarily NEEDED, but it's done a gosh darn* fine job of making it on to my luxury items list for backpacking. Sure it's extra weight, but it's versatile enough to earn its keep in my pack. I've had to dig a trench around my tent while it was pouring buckets so I wouldn't get a river running under my tent and it got it done in a few minutes. Like I said, people laugh at the idea of carrying this thing until they use it. Then they all reconsider the value and versatility of it once they see someone use it. Plus it looks so much cooler than all the other hammers out there, so bonus points for that.

Yes, it's a little absurd having an expensive, state-of-the-art hammer just for your tent stakes. It's also really, really nice. And it works really, really well (though it will remove the anodizing off your red MSR tent stakes). We love it. Would also make a good gift, as one of those luxury items a lot of people would love having but maybe not splurge on for him/her/themself.

Coolest stake hammer on the market. The head is nicely weighted so it really helps you muscle a stake into hard ground when you need to. A great product from MSR.

Absolutely worth the investment. Lightweight, strong, convenient, good handle length. I used the fork end to drive screw eyes into tree to setup tether line for dog while camping. All in all a great tool to have around.

This thing has some serious heft to it, which makes sinking those annoying, reluctant stakes into the ground surprisingly easy, and not to mention the opposite side of the hammer is perfect for removing stakes that are stuck in the ground. As soon as I picked one of these up for the first time, I knew it was time to upgrade. Much better than a rubber mallet and the fact it doubles as a bottle opener is a good plus. I highly recommend this hammer.

Great Stake Hammer
By Colorado L.
The ground in the Colorado mountains is very hard year round. The light weight plastic stake mallets do not hold up well when using any type of metal stake. The MSR stake hammer is a little heaver than the plastic mallet, but the ability to drive stakes into the hard ground and then remove them when it's time to strike camp makes the weight difference negligible. I am a Boy Scout leader, and have had other leaders & scouts borrow this stake hammer, then ask where I bought it. "GREAT PRODUCT"
