MSR Universal Footprint for 1 Person

Looking for a way to permanently attach cloth to tent. Maybe hafta get creative with some knots.

I purchased a Freelite 2 tent and then the Universal 2P footprint. I don't mind not having grommets in the corners but why have an attached carry bag?!? It's unnecessary and just adds weight. Does anyone ever actually use a footprint bag for a backpacking tent?!? If I cut it off will it impact the integrity of the footprint? How have others dealt with this issue? I expected better from MSR.

Just spent 6 nights in the Alaskan wilderness where it rained every day but one. The footprint kept the rain and waterlogged souls from soaking into the bottom of the tent.

I think it would be better to have a footprint specific to the model tent that I have because the universal size isn't a perfect fit. I have a FreeLite 2 tent and the universal footprint is about 3inches small in width and length..

Footprint is fine, it's a footprint. Not terribly revolutionary and I wish it just came with a separate bag instead of having to fold it up perfectly to align it with the attached bag. Also most other brands of footprint fit into the bottom of the tent pole but this one it's not super clear where to attach it. I slipped the grey tab around the bottom of the tent pole to make sure the footprint didn't move around, but I'm still unclear if that's the desired way.

I read all the reviews before purchasing this MSR footprint and I thought to myself, all of these folks must not understand the design behind this product. There has got to be a reason for the way the pouch is designed and attached to the footprint. I have tried about 20 times to fit the footprint in it over two bikepacking trips, and gave up and did just like everyone else when I got home: pulled out the scissors and cut the darn thing off. Other than being on the expensive side, the footprint is light does what it's meant to, and tying small knots in the cords works great instead of metal grommets. Given the $800 price tag for the hubba bubba bikepacking tent, I don't understand why this small sheet of nylon isn't included with the tent.

Great light weight footprint but MSR needs to do a video or PDF on how to fold it up to fit in the integrated bag.

Works perfectly fine but I do wish there were grommets at the corners. I tied knots in the stake cords but the tent poles slip out pretty easily anyways which makes it tough to set up if putting up the fly first

Pro: Fabric, lightweight. Cons: poor attachment system. Attached envelope is annoying. Frustrated at first with how poorly it fit, but using a short loop of shock cord on each corner, tied through the nearest part of the webbing, not the end, I was able to make it workable. The loops Te held on when the fly is attached. The envelope? I cut it off.

For bigger tents and tents that will see heavy use this footprint will protect the floor well. It's not inexpensive, but given the cost of a new tent it's worth it. Setup goes quickly and it interfaces with the tent well.

There is no way to attach the footprint to the poles. It can easily blow around in windy conditions when trying to set up the tent. This is really unfortunate if setting up in rainy, windy weather

The Universal Footprint fit my new Freelite 2 tent perfectly (that tent is awesome too btw). I think I read other reviews that complained about the lack of gromets, but I didn't find this to be a problem at all - the cords in the corners allowed me to easily stake down the tent and footprint at the same time. I did cut off the attached sleeve that the footprint came in to reduce weight, bulk, and the hassle of trying to get it back in neatly - it works fine without it.

Generally very good, but attached stuff sack is awkward to use. Now If I could only get MSR to respond to my request via the Escape Route Whistler store to send me the replacement part for my new Access tent. The carbon pole broke on my first trip around the Bowron Lakes in July. So my tent has been on the disabled list all summer. I have used MSR equipment for over 50 Years. This first time MSR has let me down. Cell 604 816-9479

It's a tent footprint, can't go wrong. Don't understand the whining about lack of grommets. Sure, independent setup would be a little easier if there were matching tabs to clip to the poles, but do what we did - tie it permanently to the tent. Everything still fits in the bag and you don't have to attach it separately each time - it's already attached to the tent. Just roll out the tent and you're done. 60+ setups over 3 years with our Zoic 4, works great.

Amazingly easy to both pull out and put away seeing as the storage bag is attached to the footprint itself. Material is super high quality and kept our bottoms dry even when it rained on our most recent trip.

Despite the cold weather (17F) and some rocky and uneven ground, it performed extremely well. It was not stiff as I packed it away and no noticeable wear abrasion after a couple of nights in the Virginia mountains. Lightweight and well-made. Very happy with it so far.

The older MSR footprints were specific to different tent models, and had grommets on each corner to allow pitching just the footprint and rainfly as a rain shelter or for ultralight travel. The grommets also let you pitch the tent rainfly first so that you could keep the inner tent dry when pitching or striking the tent in a rainstorm. The new design might keep costs down, but eliminating the grommets reduces the functionality of the whole tent/footprint package.
