It’s the second most populated city in the US, but Los Angeles is home to a ton of nature. One of the better know trails in LA is the Sullivan Canyon Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains.
The Trail
Located a couple miles north of Sunset Boulevard, Sullivan Canyon Trail meanders through 10 miles of gnarled sycamores. It’s here that a wide swatch of gravel becomes a natural creek-bed in spring and summer months. The level of hiking is very easy until about halfway through. Around the halfway mark, you can either turn back or press on up a fire road to San Vicente Mountain. It’s here where you’ll find the end to the hike!
The easy access and low level of difficulty makes the Sullivan Canyon Trail popular with outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds, including hikers, mountain bikers, joggers, and dog walkers. Dogs must always be kept on a leash when visiting this trail, and don’t forget to pack food and water for your pet along with your own! Even if you choose not to hike the entire length, you will be exposed to the southern California sun and higher elevation. Be sure to take care of yourself and your pets along the way up and down.
The region in which Sullivan Canyon Trail resides is known locally as the Big Wild, and for good reason. In spring and summer months, wildflowers abound and lush greenery grows under the canopy of shade trees.
The Wildlife

Keen-eyed visitors with good ears and ability to be still may catch a glimpse of mule deer, coyote, skunk, rabbit, or even a bobcat. This region is home to 7 species of hawks, 8 species of owls, and 17 species of snakes — a perfect ecological balance of predator and prey. Humans would be wise to research which poisonous snakes inhabit the region so as to keep out of their way. Staying on the defined trail is one great way to increase your chances that happens!
If you happen to be visiting Los Angeles and need to get your nature fix, take a drive up to Sullivan Canyon Trail in the early morning and set out on an adventure just outside the city!
