Getting a fire started in the outdoors can be quite a challenge if you don’t have the necessary materials: tinder, and something that creates enough heat to instigate combustion. When venturing into the wilderness — even just for an afternoon hike — it’s a good idea to carry a survival kit that contains at least two different types of fire starters. One of the most efficient of these is char cloth, and you can make it right in your own backyard!
Char cloth is a type of material that combusts quickly, yet burns slowly enough for you to add tinder to build your fire. It’s best made with cotton fibers, which can include old towels, denim, cotton tshirts, cotton facial pads, or cotton balls. The process requires a small metal container of some sort to char the cloth inside, and you’ll either need to build a fire or fire up the grill to char the container.
Once your container has been sufficiently charred, you’re left with an incredibly effective and portable way to get a fire going in the outdoors as long as you have a flame, magnifying glass, or something to create a spark. Just throw it in your pack anytime you’re headed out on a hike or camping adventure and you’ll always be prepared to start a fire!
