For those that are new to camping, amassing all the necessary gear and supplies can seem daunting, but it really doesn’t have to be. With only a short list of essential camping gear and a few easy recipes for camping meals, there’s no reason you can’t have a great experience with even the most minimal experience. Here are just a few very easy camping meals that only require three ingredients so you can spend less time in the camp kitchen and more time exploring the great outdoors.

Flapjacks

Flapjacks are an old-fashioned, simple meal easily prepared and quickly cooked, making it an enjoyable breakfast, lunch, or dinner option for even the most novice camper. The most basic recipe calls for three large spoonfuls of flour (white or wheat), a pinch of salt, and just enough water to make a creamy, smooth batter, but we love this modern twist that requires just one ripe banana, two eggs, and two tablespoons of coconut flour for a springy, slightly tropical flavor. Once mixed, all you need to do is ladle the batter onto your griddle or frying pan, cook until brown on both sides, add your favorite toppings, and chow down!

Blackened Fish

This recipe calls for any light, white flesh fish fillet, cooking oil (peanut is recommended for savory taste), and blackening spices, which are widely available at grocery stores. To cook the fish, begin by heating the frying pan or griddle with a light coat of peanut oil, then coat the fillet with the blackening spices, and cook on a fairly high heat, only turning the fish once. Serve alone or with whichever sides you choose. Bonus points if you caught your own fish!

Slaw Dogs

Slaw dogs are popular all over the Southern US, from Virginia to Louisiana, even all the way to Southern California. The recipe calls for a hotdog, a hotdog bun, and coleslaw, each of which are camping staples. Cook your dog on the grill or on a stick over an open flame, nest it in the bun, and then add as much coleslaw as you can handle. Of course, there’s no rule that says you can’t also add other toppings like mustard, pickles, jalapenos, onions, or potato chips — it’s your camping meal, do what you like!
