We all know the feeling—spring has finally gotten warm enough to ditch the layers, the coats, and the long pants that cold-weather outdoor adventures require. When is it time to use outdoor hiking shorts?

Obviously, performance outdoor shorts are great in the summer, but serious cardio athletes love them year-round too, since typical hiking pants can be a little bulky and restrictive. A trail run through a Southwestern desert in January may be more enjoyable with a pair of shorts, while you keep other body parts warm with a fleece vest, gloves, and a winter hat.

You can debate the fashion merits, but sometimes it’s even nice to wear a pair of polypro tights for warmth under your hiking shorts just to add pockets. Some surfers and coldwater rafters even wear board shorts over wetsuits!

What are the best outdoor shorts for watersports?

Canyoneering or rafting will get you wet, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to specific swim trunks. Many outdoor or hiking shorts are made of quick-drying fabrics, and will be more comfortable than swimming suits for being in and out of the water.

For rafting, stay away from shorts with internal mesh liners. Lined shorts by brands like Adidas are great for trail running, but get itchy when you’re sitting wet on a raft. A much better option would be unlined board shorts by a company like Under Armour.

Are cargo shorts good for hiking in the outdoors?

Cargo shorts with extra side pockets can be particularly useful for hiking and other outdoor recreation. Their side pockets are great for extra gear, especially if you’re a climber or rappeller whose harness restricts access to hip pockets.

Avoid outdoor shorts made of cotton in all but the warmest and driest climates, and don’t size them too baggy. You can’t go wrong with models by Columbia or Mountain Hardwear.
