When going out kayaking, canoeing, or stand up paddleboarding, there are some essential items that should always be a part of your on-board equipment.

Besides the basics, like always wearing a properly fitting personal floatation device, there are several compact essential items that won’t take up much room on your boat but will definitely come to your rescue in a pinch.
Whether you’re hitting the water alone or in a group, here’s a list of what to pack for paddling safety.
Leash
Not only will this keep you tethered to your board or boat, it can also be used to tow another in case a companion needs help.
Paracord
Paracord is small, portable, and has many uses, from tying up a broken rudder to towing a disabled boat.
Dry Bag
So-called waterproof cases are not always completely safe. Dry bags are inexpensive and allow you to use your phone even when safely secured in the bag.
Knife
For cutting underwater vegetation or fishing line that could entangle you or your watercraft.
Personal Locator Beacon (PLB)
A must if you’re taking a solo trip.
Compass

Great in case of fog or when in unfamiliar territory.
Safety Whistle
Useful if you get separated from your group, or in trouble on a solo trip.
Emergency Blanket
In case you get stranded in the cold.
Patch Kit
To make quick repairs. A rubber tube or tire inner tube also works well to patch holes.
Other safe practices? Bring more water than you think you will need. A delay in completing your trip, hotter than expected temperatures, or someone else in need are always possibilities when venturing in the outdoors. Pack a small waterproof first aid kit with aspirin, bandages, and antiseptic. Always carry lip balm and never forget the sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Your skin will thank you.
