penniesWhen you were a kid, you likely collected and saved every penny you came across, just knowing that someday you would have enough to buy that cool toy you saw at the store, or that candy bar mom said you can only have once in a while. Nowadays, although the penny is still in circulation, it hardly has any value in the market anymore, and even kids today would scoff at the gifting of pennies, whether it be one or one hundred.

But that doesn’t mean that the penny is no longer valuable for anything. Pennies are comprised of copper and zinc, both of which are essential components for creating a do-it-yourself wet-cell battery. There are two methods for putting together your own wet-cell battery, as this video will demonstrate. Although you probably won’t be able to cease buying commercial batteries altogether just because you know how to put together your own battery, it could be a handy piece of knowledge to have in your toolkit for survival purposes, or just as a fun science experiment. If nothing else, you’ve just found a valuable purpose for essentially useless pennies!
