Wildlife photography is all about allowing the viewer to create a connection with something wild and free. When you love the idea of taking amazing wildlife photos, there are a few tips to keep in mind.

Go Out Often

When you want to be an amazing wildlife photographer, you need to be dedicated, and that means rolling out of bed and devoting the time to it. Some people might get the amazing career-making shot by accident by going out once in a while, but if you want to make a career or even a hobby out it, make this type of photography part of your routine.

Go Out Early

When you get right down to it, a lot of the animals that you are going to want to catch on film are most active at dawn. Be willing to rise before the sun; you can bet that a lot of your subjects will be!

Invest in Telephoto Lenses

When you want to capture wildlife that is skittish or notoriously not fond of humans, make sure that you are packing a good set of telephoto lenses with you. For anything small, flighty and fast, you need a long lens; 400 mm or 600 mm is not out of the question. For larger animals that are a little more tolerant, 300 mm will often do the trick. They’re not fun to lug around, but they are essential.

Be Patient

Wildlife photography is something that takes time. Even the pros go out on long treks and come back with photos that they’re not pleased with. Be patient, sit still, and wait for that award winning shot. Sometimes, it is simply a matter of getting the perfect storm of circumstances.

Environment Matters

Wild animals are very much a part of this world, and even if you can zoom in very close, take a few shots where you honor the world around them as well. People want to see wild animals in their own world, so be sure to show it to them!
