Hammock camping can be comfortable and rewarding, but your first few times may prove a bit tricky. It’s easy to get cold, damp or otherwise uncomfortable if you forget something at home. Preparing ahead is an effective way to ensure you have a fun and memorable experience.
Bring appropriate clothing
Unlike a traditional tent, a hammock is open to the elements. In order to stay warm, you should bring plenty of appropriate clothing. Consider something like a hat or scarf to protect against the wind. Insulate by layering with alternating breathable and synthetic materials. Don’t worry if you are a bit too hot at the start of the night; as the hours pass by, your body temperature decreases and you will acclimate to the environment.
Bring a sleeping pad
A sleeping pad can provide you with extra support and warmth while you sleep in your hammock. Inflatable sleeping pads work especially well for comfort and insulation. A pad that’s inflated about 50 percent will be flexible while still giving support.
A reflective blanket helps to keep you warm, similar to a sleeping pad. It works by absorbing extra heat in the environment and reflecting it back onto you. Reflective blankets can be used in place of sleeping pads, but the most beneficial method is to use them in conjunction.
Consider a rain fly
Dealing with the cold and wet is one way to put a damper on your hammock camping trip. Pack a rain fly or tarp if you’re expecting rain or wind. A rain fly is an important piece of equipment if you want to be prepared for the elements.
Have a designated place for your equipment
Unlike tent camping, hammock camping doesn’t provide you with a place for your belongings. Think ahead and bring the appropriate containers, like dry bags, bins with lids, or even locking containers if you have valuable equipment.
Remember, your quality of sleep determines your well-being for the next day. Make yourself as comfortable as you can so that you get the rest you need for an adventurous day in the wild.
