Outdoor preparedness extends much further than making and bringing a survival kit; it is important to have a basic understanding of your surroundings as well. Whether you use them for survival or everyday hiking and camping, many wild plants have practical uses that include caring for your own health. Being able to identify a useful plant and differentiate it from species that may be harmful could very well save your life in a survival situation, especially one that includes injury.

In this video, you’ll see 8 different plants and their uses, as well as a bonus of charcoal use in the end. Although this video covers plants primarily found in the woodlands of the northeastern US, most of these plants are found widely across North America. If any of these plants grow around where you live, it couldn’t hurt to apply what you learn here at home before testing its mettle in the outdoors.
