When considering a beginning backpacker trip, choosing the route that fits your fitness level is critical. Knowing the length of your trip will be helpful in gear planning. Factoring in the weather and topographical conditions of the location will also play a role in your preparations.

Pack the Appropriate Gear

The specific gear you pack will depend on the route you’ve chosen, but certain items will always be on the list. These items include shelter, navigation, light or headlamp, first aid, sun protection, clothing layers, nutrition, knife, fire starters, and hydration.

Know Your Limits

Begin assessing your fitness level by hiking and training prior to your trip. Setting realistic goals for body conditioning, like distances, pack weight, and the amount of time you have each week to practice will help you choose your route with confidence in your abilities. One of the most often-repeated pieces of advice from experienced backpackers is “Don’t overdo it!” Hiking is a full body sport, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed when distances are long and the terrain is tough. Listen to your body, and make sure you’re treating it well throughout your hike.

Safety First

Backpacking has its share of dangers, but it’s easy to stay safe and have a good time with careful planning. Always notify someone about your whereabouts and expected return date. Be sure to pay attention to your route and understand how the trail is marked. Always carry the maximum amount of water that you can, and have a water filtration device ready for when supplies run low. A good first aid kit — and knowledge of first aid techniques — can mean the difference between life and death when you’re miles away from civilization.

Stay Hydrated

Last but most definitely not least helpful tip: Stay on top of your hydration. Backpackers need water and lots of it. The recommended amount of water per day for an adult to stay properly hydrated is about a half gallon (2L). Backpackers are walking and sweating all day and need significantly more, at least twice as much as the recommended amount. A good hydration reservoir will help you keep hydrated throughout your hike without being cumbersome.

Staying safe, knowing the route, having the right gear, understanding the body’s limits are essential tips for beginning backpackers. The sights that are seen and the challenges that are overcome make backpacking one of the most rewarding hobbies for adventurous souls.
