There’s no controlling the weather when you’re out camping or hiking. If you don’t want to change your plans overnight, despite the clouds rolling in, there are a number of techniques for starting a fire in wet weather.

One thing you can do is plan ahead. Rub some petroleum jelly into a few cotton balls and carry them in a small, sealed baggie. These make a great firestarter and will burn long enough to evaporate the moisture in dry twigs and tinder, keeping your fire alight. Here are a few more homemade firestarters that are easy to make and pack in your gear or backpack!

Another method is to create a device called a feather stick. This skill takes practice, so watch this instructional video on how to whittle your way to a roaring fire, whatever the weather.
