There are nearly innumerable ways that you can utilize a dutch oven when camping, for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. The dutch oven is designed to basically be an all-in-one cooking device, which means you can boil, fry, and even bake. If you’re the type of camp chef that really enjoys the process of dutch oven cooking, try your hand at one of these mouth-watering recipes that can easily be baked in your dutch oven.

Dutch Oven Pizza

That’s right, you can get a pie delivered piping hot to your tent even out in the woods, and it’s easier than you think. To prepare for this yummy urban treat, you’ll want to get a good bed of coals going. The dutch oven will be placed over about 10-15 coals, and you’ll want about 10-15 hot coals on the lid once you make the pie and put it in the oven. This recipe is awesome because you don’t even need to clean the dutch oven once it’s finished!

You’ll need:

  • 1 box of pizza dough mix
  • 1 can of pizza sauce
  • 1/2 lb of mozzarella cheese
  • Toppings of your choice: pepperoni and other meats, sliced veggies
  • 1 aluminum pie tin

Preheat your dutch oven by placing it on a bed of hot coals.

Prepare the dough mix according to directions, and spread in aluminum pie tin.

Add sauce, cheese, and toppings.

Place 4 stones or balls of aluminum foil in the dutch oven, evenly spaced apart, to provide a platform for the pizza.

Set pizza on top of stones, and cover with the lid.

Bake for 15-25 minutes, and allow to cool for 5 minutes before slicing.

Dutch Oven Chocolate Chip Cookies

Few things are sweeter than a chocolate chip cookie fresh out of the oven, and that joy is multiplied several times over when you get to enjoy a piping hot one under the stars. Since your dutch oven should be relatively clean from the pizza, you can easily make these right after dinner! Simplify the process even more by making the mix at home and freezing it before you pack it in the cooler. Because it contains raw egg, cookie dough should be kept refrigerated.

You’ll need:

  • 2 1/4 cup of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 12 oz bag of chocolate chips
  • 2 aluminum pie tins

Preheat your dutch oven by placing it on a bed of hot coals.

Mix butter, sugars, and vanilla in a bowl until smooth, then mix in eggs.

Slowly add flour until it reaches the desired consistency, but be careful you don’t make it too dry.

Stir in chocolate chips.

Place one of the pie tins upside down in the dutch oven, so it creates a raised platform.

In the other pie tin, drop evenly spaced spoonfuls of dough.

Place the tin with the cookies on top of the inverted tin, and bake for 5-8 minutes.
