Although winter has swiftly set in along the New England coast, those who enjoy exploring the outdoors shouldn’t feel they need to shut themselves in for the next few months. In fact, this region of the US is abundant in beautiful places to get out into nature, regardless of whether the ground is green or white. Take a look at just a few of the best places for a winter hike in New England.
Bigelow Mountain – Maine
Bigelow Mountain is one of the best places for a winter hike in New England because it has some of the most extraordinary views in the region. Care should be taken only to hike when weather is clear and calm because of the difficulty of the terrain. There are plenty of trails to attempt in the 33,000 acre wildlife area including Horn’s Pond Trail, Fire Wardens Trail, Bigelow Range Trail, and Appalachian Trail.
Mount Garfield – New Hampshire
Garfield Trail is the most popular destination at Mount Garfield because a half mile past the summit is Garfield Pond. The trail is about five miles to the summit, and there are views of several other mountain peaks nearby. South Branch Gale River is also visible from Garfield Trail. Some hikers attempt hiking several summits because they are in proximity to Mount Garfield, but extra supplies are necessary for these trips.
Precipice Trail – Maine
Precipice Trail is another trail that is only for hikers with a lot of experience. Hiking in groups is always recommended because of the 1,000 foot steep climb up Champlain Mountain on the east. Visitors can take time out to kayak or go whale watching to complete the spectacular experience. The trail is only four miles long, but it is very hard to traverse. Hikers should be aware that there are ladders and rungs that must be crossed throughout the trail, but the views are worth every bit of effort.
Stowe Pinnacle – Vermont
Stowe Pinnacle offers visitors the perfect place for a winter hike in New England. Hikers can see almost all of the Green Mountains from the summit. This trail is ideal for families since it is not as difficult as some of the other trails on the list. Hikers that want to make the trip last longer can spend time heading over to Mount Hunger for even more exquisite views.
Camel’s Hump – Vermont
Camel’s Hump makes the perfect winter hike in New England for experienced hikers. This destination is one of the most pristine hiking trails in all of the northeast because it has not been developed like most trails. Since Camel’s Hump is one of the 4,000 foot peaks in Vermont, it offers hikers spectacular views and exquisite photo opportunities.
