Like saving the planet? How about saving money? You can do both by making a few simple changes around your house. Take a look at this list of easy home water conservation tips and get ready to save water at home.

1. Faucet & pipe leaks

Check faucets and pipes for drips or leaks. Get rid of that bowl under the bathroom sink catching that slow drip. It may seem like a small amount of water but it’s wasting money.

2. Toilet leaks

Check for leaks around the toilet. If you suffer from a “running” toilet, there’s a leak somewhere in the tank or the bowl. That’s flushing money down the drain. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and don’t flush. If color appears in the tank within 30 minutes, you have a leak.

3. Shower heads

Install low flow shower heads and aerators on faucets. You can cut down on gallons and gallons of water going to waste every day with these inexpensive upgrades.

4. Washer & dishwasher

Only run the dishwasher or clothes washer with a full load. If it’s in your budget, consider purchasing new, energy efficient appliances that conserve both water and electricity And stop pre-rinsing your dishes. Modern dishwashers can handle the mess.

5. Hand & vegetable washing

When hand washing dishes, don’t run the water to rinse. Fill your second sink or a plastic basin with clean, warm water for rinsing. The same thing goes when washing vegetables.

6. Pipe insulation

Insulate your water pipes to prevent heat loss. You’ll also save money on electricity by not taxing your hot water heater.

In the yard, research local, drought-resistant plants. By using plants that are native to your area, you’ll spend less time on maintenance as well as watering, and still have a beautiful landscape to enjoy.

These are just a few of many easy home water conservation tips available for the eco-conscious consumer. Keep an eye on your tap, and you’ll see a return in your wallet.
