The South Carolina coast offers much for those seeking serenity. The peaceful coastal wetlands are home to a wide variety of wildlife including alligators, otters, wild boar, and many species of birds. Several trails are open for mountain bikers, cyclists, and hikers alike. Take a tour of these five scenic trails on the South Carolina coast.
1. West Ashley Greenway
A 10.5-mile route near Charleston, the West Ashley Greenway is a mountain biking hotspot. This dirt and gravel trail also includes narrow bridge crossings. Meandering through wetlands and tidal flats, this area offers numerous birdwatching opportunities.
2. Awendaw Passage
A 7-mile section of the larger Palmetto Trail, the Awendaw Passage follows a creek of the same name, winding through salt marshes and forests filled with South Carolina’s namesake palmetto trees. The trail ends at the intracoastal waterway, and includes a scenic overlook and a boardwalk.
3. Sawmill Branch
A wide, paved trail, the Sawmill Branch is an excellent trail on the South Carolina coast for walking or hiking. This 6.5-mile trail follows the Sawmill Branch Canal before passing through wooded areas. Be on the lookout for the alligators populating the canal.
4. Spanish Moss
Also known as the Beaufort Rail Trail or the Magnolia Line Trail, the Spanish Moss Trail takes the place of a former railway. Currently a 6.3-mile route, there are plans to extend the trail to a full 13.6 miles.
Running through a scenic marshland, the trail passes by several historic buildings including the Beaufort Depot, built in 1901.
5. Folly Beach Trail
For something a little different, take a short trek up this trail to Folly Beach, and you will be rewarded with one of the most lovely sunrise views available in the Palmetto State. After about a ten minute walk through the dunes up to the beach, you’ll be able to watch the sun break over the horizon alongside the Morris Island Lighthouse, which has graced the landscape of the South Carolina coast since 1876.
