Some of the most beautiful hiking spots in the US can also be the most crowded. During the spring and summer, thousands of hikers head to all the iconic hotspots, but there are ways to avoid crowds and still see some unique sights. Check out these four small town hiking destinations you need to add to your list!

1. Fredericksburg, Texas

Home to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, the star attraction in Fredericksburg is a massive pink granite dome thought to be more than a billion years old. Imagine all the history this rock has witnessed! Rock climbing, geocaching, hiking, and camping are all available here.

2. Polebridge, Montana

Just a mile from the entrance to Glacier National Park is the electricity-free community of Polebridge. This rustic region offers hiking, kayaking, and canoeing in a region that feels like it was left back in time.

3. Berea, Kentucky

Get a taste of Appalachia on the road less traveled by walking the 6.8 mile looping trail of Berea Forest. This wildflower strewn trail is open through October and is dog friendly.

4. Bisbee, Arizona

For something truly different, check out the quaint town of Bisbee and complete the 4.5 mile Bisbee 1000. What makes this “trail” different? You’ll be hiking up and down the town’s numerous staircases. This fun and artsy town also has a rich history as a former mining camp.
