sunburnOne of the most enjoyable things about summer is being able to spend time outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and warmth of the sun. However, the sun can also cause a harsh burn, affecting most of the population with symptoms that range from mild discomfort and dehydration to blistering skin and severe dehydration. Even with sun protection like sunblock and clothing, people can still become sunburned, sometimes without even realizing it is happening. After the sun has done its work, the pain and itchiness of a burn can be intense. Luckily, there are a few natural remedies that can help to sooth the skin and begin the healing process.

Perhaps the most well-known of natural sunburn remedies, aloe vera is a humble succulent plant that has natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. When the leaf of an allow plant is snapped off or broken open, it oozes a thick liquid. This liquid can be applied directly to a sunburn. Not only will it help to reduce the redness and begin healing the burn, but the cool juice can also aid in soothing the aggravated skin.

Aloe extract can be found in many sunburn relief creams and gels, but the natural, pure juice often works best. If there is no aloe plant readily available, the pure extract can usually be found at a health food or natural remedies store.

Another surprising natural sunburn remedy is vinegar. Although it would seem that vinegar could sting, it can actually help to reduce pain. Vinegar contains natural antiseptic properties. In addition, it evaporates quickly, which helps to create a cooling sensation. White and apple cider vinegar are most often recommended to help treat a sunburn.

Oatmeal is another of the most famous natural sunburn remedies. Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce pain and help kick-start the healing process. There are several ways to apply oatmeal to a sunburn. It can be added to bathwater to create a relaxing soak. It can also be cooked normally, creating a paste, which can then be applied directly to the skin. Skim milk or honey, both of which are known to help sooth a sunburn, can also be added to this mixture for quicker pain relief.
