Well-made but disappointing - needs design revision

The Vela -6C is a very well-made quilt with a dramatically overestimated temperature rating. The poor cold weather performance does not come from a lack of down, the somewhat lower fill power, nor the down distribution (which does need to be redistributed once the customer receives it because it is notably poor right out of the box). Instead the overestimation of the quilt's warmth comes from the draft system, which is poor on the sides and non-existent at the head. We bought the accompanying synergy sheet, which only has two loops to connect the toggles on the quilt to and none closer to the shoulders where it is most important. Even though the quilt has additional toggles. When we took the quilt out for its inaugural trip last week we were chilly at 10C, and cold at 6C (even with warm baselayers, hats, and buffs). Which I consider unacceptable for a quilt of this cost. It should be noted that the quilt is impeccably made, with excellent stitching, nice fabrics, and good loft once the down is manually spread evenly. The width is luxurious and basically unprecedented among the double quilt offerings from other companies. However, for it to be effective and work anywhere close to the stated comfort temperature of 0C it needs a redesign and so do the Synergy Lite/Luxe sheets.

Why go stingy on the fill

I bought from Ther-a-rest around 2011 a Neo Air matress, i still use it in 2024 and have respect and view the company as one that engineers a product, tests it, improves it over the years, doesn't just puts it together and sells it. Then the chinese make it, we know. I recently bought the Vela 20F, with the hope i will camp with my family at around 6500 feet altitudes in summer, early fall without the need for 3 sleeping bags (avid belly sleeper). The design Vela has, the generous size, that footbox etc.-are unique in the industry (as far as i know). But oh boy was i disappointed about the down fill. Is down so expensive nowadays, for crying out loud? Even after i fluffed it and let it for hours to aerate itself, i desperately distributed the down throughout each baffle, only to see a lot of transparent spots by looking from inside the quilt towards the ceiling light. The 20F limit (it's true, it is the limit, but still) can't be but an exaggeration. I will test in the field but from the looks of it it will be an ok summer mountain camping quilt for 50F nights in a double-walled tent. 3-4 more down hands and this could've been great. The videos of it, with the baffles seemingly bursting with fill, were made with a modified marketing prototype i am sure. Don't give up your reputation for a 5$ extra profit per quilt.

No down in foot box (literally)

So, I just recently received this quilt and it looks and feels quite nice. Most of the baffles are adequately filled, though some leave a bit to be desired. *Yes, I have shifted the down to even out each baffle* It appears as though each baffle is filled with same fill weight, unfortunately not taking into account the variation in width as it approaches the head/shoulder region. My biggest issue?there is literally no down in the bottom footbox baffle. It feels incredibly drafty when the quilt is pulled gently and that baffle is exposed. It appears as the though it was intended to be the baffle pressed up against a pad/mattress. Regardless, it provides no barrier from warm air escaping from this area. A small amount of down or 3M Thinsulate here would have significantly improved its resilience to cooler temps and overall insulation properties. I presume this is a likely culprit to why others have had experienced mixed performance at cooler temps.

Not as warm as it says

The down spreads out weird and it isn't comfortable below 40 degrees.

I haven't had it long enough to use it to it's fullest but it's an astounding piece of gear. I would definitely buy it again.

Lightweight and warm

I'm a fan of the Vela Double 20F quilt. We used it for a weekend backpacking trip in the high Sierra at the end of September (mid 30s, low 40s F) and were perfectly warm and not too hot. It's wider than I would like (because the extra width makes it more bulky to pack), but the extra space allows for movement and side sleeping. It's awesome how it attaches to the Therm-a-rest Synergy Coupler sheet (although that material is not the most pleasant to sleep on), and the elasticized foot box helps it stay in place on the sleeping pad. I'm looking forward to testing it in colder weather and glad I opted for the 20F over the 32F.

I love the quilt, but it's not rated properly.

I love this, but it's not rated properly. The bag is well designed with features such as the foot bag and pocket, well built, is light, packs small, and feels nice next to skin. It also allows you to snuggle up with your partner as the obvious selling feature. That being said, it's not accurately rated. I'll admit that I'm a cold sleeper, but the warmth provided from this compares to other zero or +2 bags. For me and my partner the comfort rating feels closer to +5 to +10, and a survival rating could be closer to 0 degrees. Overall this is a great summer and light shoulder season bag, but not much more.

Game changer

We?re a family of 4 and love this quilt. It?s way better than messing with zippers on a sleeping bag and getting tangled up at night. We paired this with the Argo blanket which it snaps with and keeps us insulated underneath. Kids can cozy up and get warm with us when just hanging out in the tent. It?s also simplified our packing situation and is super lightweight. For the quality and good night?s sleep, it was money well spent.

Love it (more of a 35 degree bag)

Love the quilt have maybe 15-20 nights in it. Great for camping with a partner and saving weight. I would not take the bag below freezing without adding a thin sleeping bag with it. It's too drafty for cold temperatures. Could be improved with more fill, as is the fill goes to the sides during sleeping and it needs to be fluffed before use. Totally manageable cons and overall would recommend this as a more comfortable and lightweight option for couples in temperatures down to about 35 degrees.
