Best price for this highly rated bear resistant canister of all the sites I perused. This was a Christmas gift to my backpacking daughter. Her sister has the one their dad used for many years. It's a great product for any camping/backpacking trip. Even over the busy holiday season, shipment was in a very timely manner.

What can I say.....a necessary evil that adds about 3.5 pounds to your load and makes packing a bit more troublesome. Would not fit horizontally in any of my ULA packs, didn't try vertically. Does fit horizontally in my NF Banshee 65 liter at the bottom of the pack (where your sleeping bag is supposed to go). Didn't see any bears this time out so don't know whether or not it is actually bear proof. Certainly is robust though which explains the 3.5 pound weight.

First of all, I can't say enough about how fast this item arrived from Sunny Sports, so THANK YOU! I had planned a last minute trip to the BWCA and the last time I was there a bear had ravaged my food in the middle of the night, so I wasn't taking any chances on this trip! I was able to fit enough food and snacks into the BV500 for a seven-day trip with some snug packing. Despite what some reviews say about this product it is VERY EASY TO OPEN if you don't over think it (like I was doing at first). The trick is to press down very lightly (seriously, almost no pressure) DIRECTLY on the little tabs right before you push them past the notches. I was struggling to open it when I was attempting to push above/around the tabs where the plastic has the ridges above/around the little tabs, and felt so silly when I realized how much easier it could be. Don't overthink it. :)

Alas our Sierra backpacking trip was cancelled due to fires and all national forests closing... but the canister looks great & im hopeful we will get to use it later this Fall. Sunny sports is awesome!!!

Much prefer this canister over the more common Backpacker's Cache black kegs. The Bearvault is lighter, with more volume and takes up about same amount of room in your pack. The see-through container is much easier for identifying where your items are within the canister too. Also prefer the screw-off lid. Once you figure out where to apply pressure (hint-directly on locking tab down near the edge of the lid) it is fairly easy to open. The UR sack bear bag is another option I have tried as well which has its pros and cons but it is not always allowed in certain parks

Although I'm not sure we actually needed a bear canister where we went backpacking (the only bear we saw was walking down a driveway 40 miles before the trailhead), we found it to be super easy to use. It fit easily in my pack, and sorting through it to find things seemed much easier than sorting through multiple food bags. Pro tip: Offer to carry the food, as your pack will get lighter with each day of the trip! And with the food in a bear canister, your pack is still full, so you can't possibly take on any other items from your backpacking partner!

The Bear Vault BV 500 worked as advertised! In Aug., 2020 we spent 5 nights backpacking in Yosemite National Park and kept all of our food in the Vaults during the days and nights. One night a bear came into our camp, picked up the Vault, tried to open it for several minutes, threw it around, and finally gave up. It only sustained a deep scratch on the top. Thanks for a quality product!

Accepted by National Forest as a bear resistant canister. The shipping was fast and the canister came as described. The size is great to store food and scented items for a multi day trip. I like the clear view design to better see contents. I think there is an opportunity to reinvent the locking lid design. As mentioned in other reviews, it is difficult to open - especially on cold mornings when finger dexterity and strength are not at there best. Unfortunately, the size of this bear canister makes it difficult to attach or put into a backpack and the weight is significant. The price also seems high for what amounts to a thick plastic canister, but the BearVault was the least expensive amongst competitors.

Works great, looks like it is going to be huge but just like with all bear cans once you get all of the hygiene and cook stuff in there as well it fills up fast. Easy to attach to the top of my ULA circuit pack. I recommend the 500 over the 450 because it's only a few ounces more but makes a big difference when it comes to longer trips or long carries on thru hikes.
