Shopper : Does this include the black storage case that I see on other websites?Steve S : Yes, it comes with a carrying satchel (small black bag). This filter rocks, I have owned several other types and use filters a lot backpacking. I was really surprised at how fast it is too. Keeping the filter fresh is key to the speed.Jeffrey M : Yup. Has a black mesh carrying case. Just used it on a hike over the weekend. Worked better than expected. Connected the unit to the bottle adapter (sold separately) and directly filtered stream water into a Nalgene 32 oz and a Platy bottle 2L.

Absolutely love the gravity works

Absolutely love the gravity works filter. 5 stars. It works so smoothly, easy to operate, handle and store. It's fast too. It's an absolute necessity for me anywhere I go and gives me peace of mind of having basically unlimited water on any trip. I can't go without it. My only negative is the zip seal on the dirty water bag is very easy to come apart and sometimes it's very hard to come across fresh water source. So once I fill up the bag I wish it would hold my precious water more securely. I have definitely lost a few liters of very hard earned fresh water because of the seal coming loose so easily and spilling out. You just have to be careful with it until it all goes into your more secure clean bag. Other than that, it's is damn near perfect! Highly recommend.

Super easy. Was a hit on our trip whwn others had pumps

This is the easiest and quickest water filtration system I've used. Four of us biked to Goldmyer Hotsprings for a few days and this kept all of our water bottles filled and cooking was a breeze with this easy system of using gravity.

Almost perfect

I have used this many times. On many hikes. Just recently we did a 27 mile hike over 4 days. It worked amazing. We have no problems with how it works. My only concern is how difficult it is to dry the clean bag. The only opening is the small bottle sized cap. This makes it very hard to dry. If it had some type of sliding closure or even the ziplock style one the dirty has it would be perfect. The ziplock style on the dirty bag could be a little better too but those work good when done correctly. It is just more challenging to line them up perfect. It is a great product and I will order another one if this one breaks. But it could be better.

A workhorse for 13 years

I have owned the Gravityworks 4L system for 13 years. I just tested it and cleaned it and it is still working great! It is a workhorse. I got it for our group backpacking trips and it quickly replaced every else's systems. For a group it is a no brainer, filtering massive amounts fairly quickly. I have not bought a smaller version for my solo trips because this is awesome. I watch others mess with their lightweight systems and struggle.

Best gravity filter system on the market

What you get from this system that you don't get from other filtration systems is the ability to take up to 12 liters of water with you. Very convenient for a camp setting when filtering water for multiple people and cooking. Out of all the filtration systems I have this is what I reach for any time I'm going out in a group. Good design and construction, I haven't encountered any problems.

Never Pump Again!

We've had our 4L GravityWorks system for seven years now (still on the original filter!) and will never consider going back to a pump system. Our typical use is in the Boundary Waters and Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park on 10-day trips. On our last portage before our destination lake for the night we pull the dirty water reservoir out of the storage bag, paddle to the middle of the lake, scoop up four liters of water, then head for a campsite. Before setting up the tent, we hang the gravity filter and we have clean water before gear is in the tent! With proper backflushes, air purges, and cleaning/drying before storage, slow filtration has never been an issue. Only one problem: the black 'cleanside cap' disappeared on our recent Quetico trip. Where do I get a replacement? And shouldn't it be a brighter color?

Worked well but needs frequent backflushing

Bought this for a week long remote trip. Worked great but didn't realize it needs a small amount of water backflushed very frequently. Started to clog and run very slow after a 5-6 bags even though it was the cleanest source imaginable.

I haven't got to put it to use yet but the days are ticking down! I did test it out and everything to properly function as it is supposed to. The backcountry of Montana will be the real test, Ha.

5 Trips to the backcountry

I bought this 6 years ago for an annual canoe trip in Northern Ontario. It works great year after year, I always backflush it before putting it away and have never had any issues. During use it will need to be backflushed every 30 - 40 liters when I notice the flow is slowing down. At this point I've probably ran around 300 liters through it and it still works like the first day.

Fantastic!

I have used both the 4L and 6L for hiking groups with scouts in tropical Australia over the last 5 years. I went from the 4L to the 6L only because I accidently lost the 4L! :-( It has high usage with up to 10 people using it over 2-4 day hikes, 2-4 times a year. I follow the long term storage instructions and the filter cartridge has tested fine prior to use in the following season. Without detracting from the 5 star rating, my two gripes are this: 1. there should be another flow clamp on the dirty side of the filter for those occasions where 6L has been filtered but more water has been added to the dirty bag - this would allow flow to the filter to be stopped when the clean hose needs to be disconnected for use. As it seems the clamp cannot be purchased by itself (only part of a hose replacement kit), I have used a plastic clothes peg to crimp off the line as a solution. 2. the zip-lock on the top of the dirty bag can be incredibly hard to squeeze shut and it is even more difficult for youth who are trying to do it. Sometimes if it isn't quite done, when the bag is picked up, it will pop open. A fold over system with a slider to seal the top as can be found on 'Osprey' water bladders, or the top of a dry bag would be a far easier design option to use in the field. Overall, an amazing, functional system.

Perfect for backpacking

The system is easy to set up and works very quickly. I brought it up a mountain and filled it in a rather shallow stream with no issue, and it fits in a surprisingly small pocket for such a vital piece of equipment. If you're carrying a lot of equipment, this filter is a must-have for saving yourself valuable weight and space!

Great Filter with less effort

I have had the 4L gravity system for 5 years now and just upgraded to the 6L system. I love this system. I do carry a backup filter and have had to use on one occasion due to my filter being clogged because I did not backflush at all for a couple of trips. I did backflush at a later date at home and this original filter was back up and going good. The original 4L dirty bag is coming apart at the top now but I have use so many times I feel that I have gotten more than my money's worth. I have put this thing through the ringer for years. I do clean per the instructions included before storing. Another great thing about this system is you can carry water in the clean reservoir with a simple plastic bottle cap. I have done this several times on top of my pack when on ridge's requiring water to be packed in. I have tried some other methods and this is the best I have found. We typically hike 40-80 miles a year and this has been a wonderful asset out there. Happy Hiking

Questionable reliability

I purchased a 4.0L Gravityworks filter back in 2022 and was initially exceptionally pleased with it. Used it the summer of 2022 and was quite happy with the results. I followed the instructions to a "tee" at the end of the season when putting away for long term storage. When I pulled it out May/2023 I didn't test it beforehand (I should have, that's my fault). But I hiked up into the bush and when I got to the camping area I went to get my water. I filled the dirty reservoir, and made all the necessary attachments to the clean bag. Zero flow. None. The water wasn't penetrating the filter at all. I was mortified at the catastrophic gear failure. I always backflushed, had used the filter only sparingly and, as mentioned, followed all instructions for long term storage. So I was forced to boil water for my drinking and cooking needs. Not an ideal situation, particularly since I'd only brought so much fuel. I was able to boil enough water for my needs for two nights in the bush but it was a labour intensive undertaking that should have been avoided but for a clogged filter. After that trip I purchased a replacement filter and took it on a six day solo hike of the North Coast Trail. On night one it worked like a charm. Super fast flow and I had eight liters of water in about 10 minutes. During the trip I always made sure to back flush after every other filter. Nevertheless by my last day the filtering process took considerably longer than that first day. Eight liters was taking me about 30-45 minutes to filter. I've just stored the filter away for the winter (per instructions ) and will test it again before my first hike in spring 2024. I want to like this filter, I really do. When it works it works well, it's lightweight, simple to use and takes up remarkably little space in the backpack. But my experience to date has made me nervous to rely on it, particularly during multi day through treks. As such I believe my experience to date warrants a three star rating.

Great Inline Gravity Filter

This is the first gravity filter system I've owned. I owned pump filters in the past. This purchase was long overdue as it is a tremendous time saver. I've used other people's gravity filters such as Katadyn. I chose this system over Katadyn because of the in line filter. I could use it to suck water out of cracks in rocks if needed which helps bridge the gap in functionality between pump and gravity filters. The only downsides I see to the inline filter over the in bag filter like Katadyn is that it is easier to clean and visually inspect for contamination/clogging with the Katadyn filters. This being an enclosed filter, it is harder to dry out. I often camp in below freezing conditions which can destroy a filter if water freezes in the filter. If and when this happens, I would get a Katadyn filter for winter camping and use the GravityWorks filter the rest of the time. I use alum powder for silty water and it keeps the filter running smoothly.

AK Moose Hunt

I used the gravity works 6.0L for 2 weeks on a moose hunt in Alaska. It filtered water for myself and two clients for everything. We were using water from a pretty nasty lake. Water always came out clear and clean and actually pretty quick too.

Lightweight, super fast for group of 2 or more.

I bought this for a group backpacking hunt and was really impressed with it! The bags have a wide enough lid that getting water from a stream or river is super fast. Still water takes slightly longer. This filters water super quick as well, I never timed how long it took but approximately a minute for the 6l version. This will be my go to water filtration system for all my backpacking hunts unless weight saving is crucial and only filtering for myself then I will stick to my MSR thru-link.

Wonderful water filter and even better customer service!

We have had this filter for 8 or 10 years now. It's quick, easy to use (we switched from a hand pump filter - game changer!). AND it gives us great carrying capacity for dry camping when there's no nearby water source (4 liter bags). Additionally, the customer service by Cascade Designs (the parent company in Seattle) has been excellent! We had an issue and they quickly assessed and helped us out so we didn't miss our next scheduled trip! The filter is a wonderful design that works over and over again (over 1000 liters), and it's the customer service responsiveness that keeps us coming back to their products. PS Had to filter very green water from a hole once and we lived to tell the tale - no ill effects. We back flushed the filter a lot and all was well.

Definite Great Buy

Very easy source of filtering water for 6-8 backcountry campers. The convenience of being able to haul water from a source to camp enables ease of filtering and less time spent filtering and can occur while relaxing, cooking, or even sleeping. Found that the filter remained usable throughout a 9 day backpacking trip in the Windrivers by back-flushing and rinsing the filter on a daily basis. Very happy with this filter, the bag construction, and tear resistance.

Makes Life Better

Our annual 1 week backcountry canoe trips (4-6 dads and up to a dozen kids) are without question made better by the Platypus (we have 2 on the trips - the larger 4L & a 2L). They are simple, beautifully mechanical, and do what they are supposed to. Having drinkable water always on the go on our busy sites is a whole different experience now that pills and pumps have been replaced by the superior gravity feed. In particular like the simplicity of the hose/tube system - friction fit stock tubing and cleanly separate components takes away concerns of mechanical connection failure. Sure there is some theatrics in pulling and re-attaching hoses for filling your water bottle - but that is in the fine tradition of simple, do-it-yourself fireside ingenuity. Well done!

We "backflush" the filter cartridges every time we use them (leave a few ounces in the clean bag and reverse feed the water back into the dirty bag; it removes sed...
