Overall good pack but load shifts quite a bit

Overall I really like most of the features of this pack but there are a few things I didn't like a whole lot. I used to have one of the atmos packs but the hip belt just didn't sit right on me as I am very bony so I ended up exchanging it for the exos. I have been pretty impressed with it so far, the hip belt is much less rigid so it conforms to my bony hips but also still supports the load well. It is very easy to load and the compression straps go all the way down each side of the pack you you can really get the pack small. All of the zippers and plastic hardware are ykk or itw which is awesome to see! All around the build quality is great with the exception of the back harness attachment mechanism. The way it attaches is with little plastic toggles that slot into a plastic ladder sewn into the back mesh, in theory it sounds pretty good and is light weight but in practice it's not great. There is nothing that actually rigidly locks anything into place and this can cause the whole pack to move and sway as you walk. It's not necessarily a huge problem but it's a very odd feeling. If you don't mind a pretty bouncy or floaty feeling as you hike, the pack itself really is great and I would recommend it.

Lightweight, comfortable

I like this pack a lot -- it's comfortable and light. For some trips, I have to pull out a larger pack, but if the gear fits in my 58, I'm happy.

Far and Fast

Backpacking is a major part of my life and something I wouldn't be able to live without doing. By being outdoors so often, I dont really replace gear a lot. I replaced my original pack that I had since I was 16 when I was 20 and then I replaced that one when I was 28. The pack I've spent most of my recent years in was the Atmos 65 (pre AG) I got it as a gift from a friend and being on the smaller frame size that pack dwarfed me but I didnt mind, I like my creature comforts. This year I got a look at the new Exos 58 I've been looking to shed weight from my kit while maintaining a high level or adaptability. The Exos even though its not a light as some packs out there. It fit my frame like a glove, when I demoed it I loaded it with 45lbs of kit to push the limits of it and it took it, not only that but it didnt bother my hips like most packs have. Im over the moon about this pack and Im extremely happy with this purchase. I'd probably add an even lighter pack to my quiver in the future but right now this fits all my needs and has taken every bump blow and bash I could throw at it. Holding climbing gear to backpacking kit. Its my UL Far and Fast work horse.

Definitely an improvement over the previous EXOS models

All the updates are improvement from previous generations of this model, the tightening straps on the sides are outside the water bottle pockets making it a little hard to place a few bottles on the outside, but other than that the overall adjustability, the reinforced padding on the hipbelt and the more streamlined fit between the pack and the hipbelt make it a much more comfortable fit than the old one. It doesn't come with a rain cover but you can definitely fit one over if needed.

Not what I had hoped it would be

In 2016 I thru hiked the Appalachian Trail using the then version of the Exos 58. It was a great pack for the trip. Despite not having an adjustable harness at that time, it fit me well. I was very happy with it. When I saw the new Exos 58 in April, I bought one to replace my old one. I had high hopes for it given my previous experience. I used the new Exos for a 50 miler on the AT in NY and CT last week. While it is admirable to add an adjustable harness to the pack, this design allows for a ton of movement of the pack load. The plastic ladder in the backpanel that accommodates the plastic harness adjustment clips, slip against eachother creating load movement. This coupled with the sliding connection of the outside of the harness to the frame, adds to the shifting of the load as well as a pretty constant swishing noise as you walk. I would suggest addressing this in future iterations of this pack for less movement and sound. This new Exos version addresses the missing hip belt pockets in the previous version by adding a pocket on each side. While the zippers are a bit of a challenge to open and close with one hand, the pockets are large enough and useful. The hip belt padded area has also been lengthened making it more comfortable. The brain of the pack is still removeable but the top flap that is used when the brain is removed is smaller than older versions making for a tight closure. If I had a very full load, or was carrying a bear can inside, I'd be concerned that the top flap would be too small to fully close the pack. The overall weight of this pack has crept up from previous versions as well. As a big fan of Osprey and the Exos in particular, I'm disappointed with the new Exos 58 and will likely return it. However, if load movement and noise dont bother you, it is a high quality pack that appears durable and worthy as a candidate for your longer backpacking adventures.
