Review Summary

Despite the trend for everything lighter, this stove is the most versatile of all the MSR canister stoves! Has a windscreen so you can use it in windy areas, bake bread, and boil water all thru the winter. The supports are strong and big enough for larger pots, Simmers terrific. Turning the canister upside down allows you to use all the fuel- nothing wasted. It is compact and plenty light enough.

This stove started out great. Great function, great pack weight, fast boil. Now is where the two stars comes in; it is not in any way what I would call "durable". Unless mine had a faulty weld, it seems that basic bumps in a pack can and did break the gas intake connection. I didn't realize at first, set up my stove on the second day of my trip, lit the burner, and after a second heard a combustion sound and saw a flame coming from the bottom. There was a faint blue flame still coming through the burner, but not the pressure it should be. At this point, less than 2 years and only 4 trips deep, this stove seems to be completely ruined. Do I weld it? Replace it? Choose something different? I'm not hard on my equipment, but I now have a useless stove and a coffee percolator with a thick layer of carbon from before I realized the stove was broken. Just another layer of frustration and disappointment.

The WindPro II stove works beautifully. I had an original WindPro that recently gave out and could not be repaired, and the new model works with the same degree of simplicity, efficiency and dependability that I had come to expect from my old stove. This is the 5th MSR stove I have owned and 4 of them still work perfectly, so it looks like my new WindPro II will be with me for a long time.

Replacement for my long time use Rapidfire stove. Works smooth and easy to adjust and cook with. Performed just like my Rapidfire but slightly better. Inverting the fuel can distributes an even burn for long low flame cooking. Will it last 30 years like my Rapidfire time will tell. I hope Cascade asks me again about this stove, 5, 10 and 15 years from now. MRS stuff rocks.

Simple, versatile, tried and true design. This stove has everything I need in a gas canister stove; no frills, lightweight, windscreen compatible, stable, and no proprietary components. Love this stove!

Awesome stove! I purchased a bunch of these to be used as backpacking stoves for a university outdoor program. They've been easy to use, convenient, and students enjoy them (a lot more than whisperlites!) Thank you!

I'm very pleased with this stoves performance! I have used it in the liquid feed configuration and I wasn't expecting that there would be some burn off time before the stove shut down after I turned it off. Other than that learning curve, it's been reliable and quick. It's lower profile and stability makes it much better when cooking for a group than a typical sit on top canister stove. Overall, very happy with the purchase!

Fantastic stove! I'd been waiting for it to come back into stock so I could buy a second one, and I'm very pleased with it! I guide backpacking trips where we make most of our food rather than using freeze-dried meals, and these stoves are a must have! They're comparable to the infamous whisperlite, but use the iso butane fuel. Great heat control, super efficient even in the cold, and the ability to use a wind blocker is incredibly helpful. You don't want to risk not being able to eat dinner when you're in the backcountry, and these are extremely reliable.

I bought the Windpro II because I wanted to be able to use a windscreen for faster heating and greater efficiency (it has been excellent in that respect). This stove heats quickly and efficiently; and the burner head has a stable solid base unlike the stoves that screw into the top of the fuel canister. I'm very happy with my purchase. My only caution is that one of MSR's selling points is that you can turn the canister upside down for a stronger flame in cold conditions, but it's my understanding that fuel canisters often have metal shavings inside (from manufacturing) that settle to the bottom and can clog up the stove and fuel lines. So I always use it with the canister upright. I've used it down to freezing with no issues lighting or burning strongly.

Great stove that has proven efficient. Took it on the west coast trail to make all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The shield improved boil time and reduced gas waste. I have a pocket rocket version which I love and has been my stable for weekend adventures but this one is brill when cooking for two. Recommend!

I bought this stove to use for boiling water and using a fry pan. It is excellent at boiling water but needs a fourth support for better fry pan stability. I also liked how it can turn a canister upside down for use in cold weather or to use the last drops of fuel. The stand works well but is too bulky. Fold out legs attached to the nozzle would work much better.

I had been considering purchasing one of these stoves for years. I took the plunge when a swivel was added to the hosing that allowed the cartridge to be easily inverted. Despite adding a few grams to my kit, the stability and ability to use a wind screen have been well worth the slight weight penalty. Have used many makes and models of stoves over the years as a guide, outdoor educator and climber. This has become my go to, year-round stove.

This review compares the Optimus Vega and the MSR Windpro 2. Advantages of the Optimus: Lower profile. Nubs at the ends of the supports to prevent your pot from sliding. Convenient, fold-out legs for the flipped canister position. (The MSR uses an awkward-to-pack plastic thing). And the Optimus looks cooler. Advantages of the MSR: Larger burner for better heat distribution. More travel in the flame adjustment for finer simmer control. (You can manage with the Optimus, but it's touchy at the low end). Upshot: If fine cookery is not important to you, the Optimus has the edge. If fine cookery is important, go for the MSR. (Which was my choice).

Great all-around stove and perfect for backpacking. The only issue I have is that while connecting and disconnecting the fuel, it sprays fuel everywhere. Has anyone else encountered this or found a way to eliminate this?

The valve on the Windrpro 2 is excellent for simmering food and has a great range of fine adjustment. I can warm a sauce or sear a steak with this stove. The remote canister is much better in that if you use a trillium stove base you can get a rock solid set-up unlike a stove with the canister mounted below the stove with it's narrow footprint even if you use the plastic legs that you can buy seperate. I never fear the pot and/or stove tipping when set up this way. I like my ultra-light alcohol stoves but for making a real meal this stove is hard to beat.

This stove has many advantages over other cartridge stoves. Because the fuel canister is located apart from the burner a windscreen can be used without danger of overheating the fuel. A big advantage in windy conditions. The fact that the canister does not act as the base of the stove makes it more stable which is important when cooking in larger pots or when using smaller canisters. Any type of cooking vessel can be used unlike some stove systems that are dependent on a particular vessel. The ability to invert the canister means better cold weather performance. The only downside is that it is heavier and bulkier than a stove like the pocketrocket. But I think all the other advantages make it the best all around choice for backpacking or car camping.
