Great Travel Backpack!

Plenty of room for a one week trip to Mexico! My days of checking bags is over. I'll use it on my walk on the Camino Santiago this fall. Very happy with the features and price. Very comfortable as well! ??

Versatile

I've used the pack a few times with all my overnight backpacking gear, approximately 25lbs, with water but without food and it handles the weight well and is not a strain on longe hikes. there is still room for a few more items. I intend to take this on a Grand Canyon rim-to-rim, overnight hike in a few weeks and there is nothing to indicate I will have any problems.

Very Nice Bag

Although I expected a rain cover with the purchased, the bag is very versitle and a great value for everything that Kelty offers. Not to mention the lifetime warranty.

Great service and price

I couldn't be happier with the product and service from Sunny Sports. I was a little hesitant to order from them after reading some of the negative reviews, but the crazy good price was worth taking a chance on. They did a fantastic job. I really don't know how it got to my house so quickly and the pack I bought is top notch.

Excellent longevity

I love this bag. I do have the older version of this bag, purchased in 2010 at REI. It has held up to hundreds of miles of hiking, along with international travel, and still looks and feels brand new. Highly recommend.

Great bag

So far I?ve only taken it on ?urban? adventures through airports and such. But had held up well. Plenty of room for everything you could need in a few days in a city or several weeks on a big hike. Looking forward to getting it out on the trail as soon as the weather cools off a bit.

Redwing 50

This pack is great! I would highly recommend. Got to test it hiking Mt. Elbert recently. The bag is big enough to use as an overnight bag, but small enough to use as a day bag if you leave camp setup. I was able to fit my tent, tent foot print, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, pot, water, water filter, cloths, pillow, and all the other camping items with ease. The pack is deceivingly light compared to other overnight bags. I have a Gregory and Osprey that are much heavier. This back fits and wears like a day pack with the capacity of an overnight pack. I wore this pack loaded down for 12 miles, with 5,300 feet of elevation and forgot the pack was there. Would highly recommend!

Good Plein Air backpack

The pack performed as I had hoped. It held all my Plein air painting gear easily and my tripod utilized the outer pouch ?pass through? feature as a way to mount onto the pack. I?m 72 and found the pack comfortable to carry, a good fit.

Great Pack for day use or overnight!

Want a pack that can do it all? Our family has owned three Redwing 50's over many years. My first one has been to every continent, from trekking in Nepal to communing with penguins in Antarctica! Both my wife and I took Redwings on our second Nepal trek. The newer of the two was finally given to our Boy Scout grandson. I bought the third one a few years ago to replace my original which had faded from red to pink. With careful packing and the right equipment it is great for overnight. It also make a commodious day pack if you're carrying rain gear, camera equipment, or just a lot of snacks! Kelty forever!

Almost every single change from my previous Redwing 50 is a noticeable improvement and everything I love about this pack is still there!

Not Used Yet -- Have had a RedWing2650(44) for a number of years used for Travel and like very much -- Purchased the RedWing50 for a little more capacity -- Like the updated design hope I can still use as a carryon ...

Love the bag.

I love the bag, my only issue is that it is a work bag and to big for what I need. I was looking for a 35-40 litre however nothing was in stock that worked for me. I love Kelty and this is my third Kelty bag I just wish their inventory of smaller bags were better kept in stock.

Want to Love This Pack

This pack has all of the right fundimental attributes to be your one stop shop for EDC, airline travel and quick backpacking trips. Ample volume, compression straps, low weight, removable hip strap & wide shoulder straps. But the flaws are, unfortunately, fatal. Worst first: The way the frame is bent at the top of the pack makes the hydration pouch unusable for a laptop. Hard stop. This pack is unusable for anyone who works on a laptop. The other 3 main flaws are: 1. Poor quality materials. Polyester vs ripstop nylon, very small zippers. These are not just theoretical flaws. I've owned a redwing 44 for 4 years as my only pack other than a 65L backpacking bag. The bag is incredible and finding a worthy replacement has been a huge challenge. However... The thin main zipper has failed and the fabric is wearing through. Had they used nylon and a larger zipper for the main pouch I probably wouldn't be looking for a replacement. 2. The side pockets are useless other than to carry small, very light items. They flap around when the bag isn't full and feel awkward. Also, like all of the pouches on this bag the way the fabric lays they are hard to open without two hands. Buyers may want to consider paying a tailor remove them. 3. The hydration pocket is not square. This is another issue that prevents this being good as a daily driver for those who carry laptops. This bag is a nice iteration on the old 44. The frame is much better, they gutted the useless front pouch, fixed the water bottle holders and the hip strap can be removed leaving the frame intact. I believe it is also a bit lighter. But you might want to wait for next year's model because this needs one more pass.

Just about perfect

Well built, very thoughtful construction and very utilitarian. Fits and wears well. The only complaint-the lack of hip belt pockets. Would highly recommend this pack

Great pack for this old mans needs

Packed this think down for a 3 day/two night trip into Big Bend National Park in November. With a change of counts and shirt, a couple pair of socks and underwear, and what I would consider basic food, peanut butter, nuts, a couple cliff bars and 3 gallons of water, I had every pocket and stash spot full. The pack held up well. I?m 54 yrs old and don?t do ?extreme? trios, so this is a good fit for me. I think a younger/ more experienced hiker could be better serves with a 65l.

I like the pack

First hike, I went to pickup my pack and a couple seams popped in the connection at the top of the strap. I didn't expect that.

Not as good as previous year's model

I ordered the 2020 Redwing 50 and the Previous Year Model Redwing (2016?) . I packed the same 33lb set of gear into each of them and strapped them on for a full comparison. Note: I am a 5’5” female and I packed both the men’s and women’s 2020 version for comparison. The previous year model was only available in the men’s version. The results of my personal trade study are below. Load support: 2020 Model. • the perimeter frame supports slightly better with a curve at the top back to create more headspace Fit adjustment: 2020 model • Torso adjustment has no additional straps on the 2020 model. It’s done once and can get to fit my size (17in torso). The previous year has perfect adjustment that slides within a certain range while the straps then have to be managed. There are velcro strap retainers that don’t fit the rolled up strap when the straps are at their longest. • The women’s model did fit a better but that is not to be unexpected as I’m female. Ventilation: Tie • The cool vent back is an improvement over the previous year model. • The fabric on the previous year may breathe a bit better on the hip belt. • Difficult to assess while indoors Shoulder Straps: Previous Model • The straps are wider on the men’s 2020 model which just doesn’t fit my narrower, square shoulders. The women’s version is better on width but still has neck rub as they’re pretty close together. • The previous model fabric is a bit less comfortable on the neck if it does rub in future. Hip belt: Previous model • Both are a bit thin in support and have the pull forward tightening design. The previous model has wider cinching straps that also make it more supportive across the front and potentially hotter. Pockets: Previous Model • The front pockets are similar sized between the 2 models. The previous model has one more tier of organizational pockets internally with fleece for a tablet screen. On the previous model it’s floating as a stuff/shove pocket in the design. This makes it actually hold more when the main compartment is stuffed full as that intrudes into the 2020 model’s pocket since they share a wall and stitching. • Stuff/Shove pocket on the previous model that was dropped in 2020 model. It clips shut at the top and on the sides as compression straps. It also has triangular stretch mesh along the sides to keep from losing smaller items. Can hold a 10x7x2” first aid kit securely which had to be lashed onto the 2020 model. • Phone pocket on 2020 hip belt did not accommodate an iPhone 11 pro with a case. Seemed like the phone may catch as well as it stuck out from my hip when used without the case. A 2-sided zip pocket that could be opened from the vertical side and top would be an improvement on the concept. • Lower side mesh pockets are deeper and have fabric bottoms on the 2020 model. This makes them more durable and items are more secure. More items fit and stayed put better. • Water Bladder pocket: I don’t use them for bladders so can’t say how they would work for that function. The 2020 model has a single fabric slip pocket while the previous model has a Velcro strap closure and fleece lining for a computer/tablet plus hooks to hold the bladder up. The previous year’s pocket is also a bit larger/longer to accommodate a computer – possibly making the need for the hooks. This made it better for my non-bladder and non-computer items that I put in there. Gear Loops: Tie • 2020 model has two sets on the front far enough apart to mount a pouch on while previous model has hard-to-access, stylishly-hidden single line down the center. • Both include a grab handle as part of their daisy chain of loops. • Previous model has lash points on the bottom where 2020 model is bare. Equally good on both: • Large u-shaped zipper access for top/front – the zipper pulls on previous year have plastic finger loops which is a nice feature. • Top pockets are identical and include a key clip • Both have similar load adjustments and sternum straps. • Main compartment capacity is identical. I’d like a 52-55L version in future to keep from nearly bursting this one. Although it’s pretty amazing how much I got stuffed in there while leaving the top pocket empty. I think my husband would need a bit more space for the same list of items as his clothes are larger. • Kelty signature side pockets with behind pass through • Tool loops: Stitched in half on the older model making them stronger/stiffer while left as single strap on 2020 model. • Weight – they’re pretty close on my scale. Equally poor on both: • No zip hip belt pockets. • Exposed zippers are not water resistant In the end, I’m keeping the previous model year as it held the gear without the need for additional lashing with not much tradeoff in comfort. I will update the hip belt to at least add on pockets or get a replacement with pockets and better fit. Hoping next year's incorporates some reversions and revisions.
