Awesome backpack, Maya approved !!

The backpack was just perfect for my dog. I can tell she didn?t mind wearing it around, despite the fast that she hates anything that feels like a harness. I was able to put a collapsable water bowl, treats, poop bags and of course her walking booties ! I got so many compliments from people! Durable material, easy to clean and my favorite color too!

The Sizing Guide Is Correct

We took it on our first test hike today, and it was great! For fit purposes, Mabel is a small border collie mix, 18 in. high at her shoulders and about 30 pounds. I ordered the XS for her, after chatting with a Ruffwear rep to make sure that was the right choice, and it fits perfectly. I was worried that the secure strap under her belly might be tight, but the elastic does its job there. She hiked for an hour this morning and seemed not to notice the empty pack any more than she notices her usual harness. Next up: putting some snacks in the pockets and heading out for a longer hike. I think it'll still be great.

Awesome

We got 2 of these backpacks for our cattle dogs . They fit great and the boys took right to them. Unfortunately they managed to chew the buckles off of 1.When we called Ruffwear - we were only looking for some new buckles to purchase- customer service was super helpful and sent us a gift card to get another pack. The packs hold the water bottles with room for extras- A great purchase and the customer service is OUTSTANDING- We also have the front range harnesses and love them

Love it!

I bought this as a second pack so both my dogs could pack a few of there items while we hike/camp. They did great last summer with my first pack.

Same great harness now with a pack.

Loved the Front Range harness, now I love the Front Range Pack. Just the right size for your average outings. I wish I could have used my existing front range harness and added pack-bags to the sides instead of buying a whole new product.

Great backpack

I love that it fit my dog perfect. He was very proud to have a job of carrying his own water and his water dish and his poop bags. It also gave him a nice work out. Overall pockets are spacious. Great doggie backpack

Fits great!

Maggie isn't a big fan of harnesses or packs, but she wore this pack and hiked hard! She runs and smiles; I don't think she even notices the pack on her, as long as she's having fun! She carries her own bowls, snack and food. It fits her perfectly, so much better than cheap packs.

Best thing ever!

Awesome! My newer rescue fox terrier is much more calm and relaxed with her new "job". She loves to walk but never is tired out! With her pack she carries are essentials (keys, phone, poop bags) and all the little treasures our kids collect out on hikes. It also has a top hook for all of her treats for easy access for when she needs positive reinforcement and meeting new people/kids! Looking forward to using it hiking with her next year when we plan to go camping with her!

Perfect for Our on the Go Pup

We bought this day pack and two of the 1L collapsible water bottles to use for backpacking and hiking trips with our dog. We were able to fit one full bottle perfectly on each side with room to spare and he looked adorable in his backpack. It was nice being able to keep his collapsible bowl and a few other essentials for his in his pack to save space and weight in ours on our first backpacking trip. The medium was great for our 75 lb lab/hound mix. Once packed, even with the full water bottles, it weighed about 6 lbs and he adapted very quickly to the pack. Once we had the straps adjusted it did well, only needing a little rebalancing as the water bottles were used (I tried to alternate which one was used at each water break to keep the weight as even as possible on each side). I would highly recommend this! My friend has the Approach day pack from Ruffwear for her pup and while it's also really great, I'm partial to this one because of the extra padding on the straps and it's less bulky, even when full.

Front Range

This is a great harness. The only thing I would suggest to make it better would be removable bags or maybe cinch straps to decrease the profile when bags aren?t in use.

Very balanced and durable

My last pack required exactly equal weight for the pack to stay even on my dogs back. This pack is much more forgiving and comfortable for my dogs. Also, the fabric is durable enough that my dogs can rub up against cactus without puncturing the ruffwear bladders inside (I've replaced/repaired many bladders in my last pack)

Great pack

Had the approach, which was ok but shifted no matter how I had it. Unless my dog pulls suddenly to the side, the front range actually stays centered. Only thing I wish it has more of an open back for ventilation.

Doesn?t flop around when I leap through the woods!

I drink a lot of water and my new low-profile pack holds 2 soft-sided liter bottles of water. My mom can?t carry enough for me when we go on our long hikes.

Great pack, fits a lot for a day pack

I got the L/XL size and it can fit a lot more than I expected, and I've been using it for two-night backpacking trips. I tie her Ruffwear sleeping mat on the top with a bungee and there's enough room to carry her food, treats, water, Ruffwear bowls, Front Range harness, Knot a Hitch, Fido Pro (emergency dog carrying sling), and that Ruffwear stick toy. I even attach a wet-bag to the side to put her poo bags in to hike out (friendly reminder, there's no such thing as the forest poop bag fairy to clean up the bags dropped on the trails). The navy color is nice, and when the pack weight is balanced it stays put quite well and I can keep the harness straps pretty loose - she doesn't seem to notice the pack at all, other than she starts acting like she's "working" and is so focused lol. WISHES: I wish the pack came off/could be bought as a Front Range Harness accessory so when we are at camp she could just wear the Front Range Harness, instead of me having to pack one separately. However, I get that this is meant as a day pack even though it can carry enough for overnights. I also wish there was a waterproof lining or waterproof pack option so I don't have to take her pack off every time we cross a stream because she likes to lay it in to cool off before we continue. It does dry off pretty quickly though and has drainage holes, but then everything inside is wet too lol. PSA: I really wish they'd mention this on their pack product pages because it's really important: a very fit dog trained to carry a large pack on different hiking terrains, that also has the correct body shape for it (big square like a Pyrenees), can carry a max of 25% of its body weight. My dog fits the criteria, is 105lbs, and I have her carrying about 10lbs and wouldn't want to do more than 20lbs to be safe (haven't needed to carry more than 10lbs yet). Also your dog shouldn't be carrying ANYTHING until all joint development is complete, I waited 2 years for my giant breed to finish all growth before putting a pack on her. Won't take quite so long for smaller breeds. Don't damage your dog's back and joints!

Love it!

Fits great, our Picard hardly noticed it (we use a Front range harness on her), and with the 1 L bottles she carries her own water.

Amazing pack for multi days trip

We just went on a 5-days backcountry trip with this pack on our dog Timber and it did a great job! Very good stability of the pack, especially that Timber often rolls on his back and is a very active dog so I was worried that the pack would rub and create friction spots but it stayed well in place! No friction spots at all! He carried all his food for the whole trip (about 18 cups of food) and there was still a bit of space in the medium size pack. We had ordered the small size at first because Timber?s chest is 25 inches, but it ended up being slightly too tight with no room to lengthen the back strap. So we ordered the medium and kept the small for our other dog, and the medium is a better fit. It can tighten more if your dog?s chest is smaller than the chest size range indicated on the website. 25 inches was kind of in between sizes so we weren?t sure what to order, but now I would definitely say go with the bigger size if that?s your case too. Anyway we are very satisfied with the packs! I?ve seen other dogs with packs on the trail we hiked, and they didn?t seem as stable as this one. And I love the padding it really offers better protection for the skin.

Awesome pup pack!!

Fits well and true to size range. The pack itself is very durable and the material is nice and heavy. This is well worth the price.

I see the vision!

I purchased this pack to use as a day-hike alternative to my Approach Pack. With a smaller capacity, it seemed like a good option for shorter, less technical hikes. I also was curious to try out the updated design features and compare it to the older style Approach Pack. The biggest draw for me was the chest stabilizer, which was a great call on the part of Ruffwear. However, it should be noted, that while the chest stabilizer is a great feature, it makes the pack less adjustable. My dog measures 30cm in circumference at the widest part of his ribcage which places him squarely in the medium pack according to Ruffwear's sizing chart. However, Ruffwear should also be taking into account the distance from the widest part of the ribcage, along the dog's belly, to the center of the dog's chest (just below where the collar sits. (This is where the chest stabilizer spans.) This distance for deep chested dogs is greater than the average dog. In the Approach Pack this distance is adjustable. However, in the Front Range, this distance is not adjustable due to the chest stabilizer. This means that the girth strap cuts into my dog's armpits because the strap is pulled too far forward by the chest stabilizer. For these packs that have a built in chest stabilizer, I recommend that Ruffwear switch its sizing to a measurement from the bottom of the ribcage to where the dog's collar rests on its chest. This will prevent sizing issues like the one I am running into I also was a little surprised at the lack of padding on the straps compared to the Approach Pack. I have actually taken the rear strap from my Approach Pack and have changed it out for the one on this pack because they are so inadequate. The padding only spans a couple inches and leaves ample room for chaffing. This is a major reason why I am giving this pack 3 stars. It's never a good idea to remove features that center around comfortability. Overall this pack is a great attempt at a new design, but the sizing and comfortability need to catch up to the vision. Overall

Great Product

It took me several tries to get the straps tighter so this would fit without sliding around. Highly recommend watching the adjustment videos to help. The straps are incredibly hard to loosen and tighten at first. Overall, this product is great and is really great quality!

Great quality

I?m enjoying this pack a lot for my chocolate lab. He?s still getting used to wearing it after years without carrying anything. The material quality and durability are fantastic, and the most pack seems light while allowing plenty of space for trail essentials. Very nice fit and adjustability.

Good but wish it came in XXS

So far we love this pack although ideally I would?ve gotten an XXS if that size was available. With some layers on in the colder weather the pack should fit perfectly.

LOTS OF COMPLIMENTS!

Overall, this was a great purchase and I'm happy I bought this pack for my pup. However, I'm always weary of size charts as my gal is an awkward size. She has a long narrow *** and frequently in between sizes. According to the size chart she should have been an extra small perfectly but there is a second strap that goes lower on the belly. For Runa it sat on the area of her ribs where it transitions to her belly and it was way to snug. I was afraid she was uncomfortable and if it got wet it may have caused some chaffing. If there was 1-2 inches more of adjustment on the strap it would have been the ideal fit. We emailed with the Ruffwear team and they recommend returning and exchanging for the Small. The issue with this size is that she she fits perfectly in the XS category so the shoulder area is a pinch too loose even when cinched all the way down. But the belly strap now fits perfectly. Wins some you loose some. We've been wearing it around the neighborhood on walks and just went on our first hike with a loaded pack and she was the talk of the trail :)

We bought a size small in the Aurora Teal for our 35 lb. Australian Cattle Dog, Chihuahua mix. She has a small neck and deep chest. The neck is a little loose even on the tightest setting, and the chest area fits her better than the front range. This pack is nothing short of amazing. We bought it in anticipation of a 15+ mile hike of the Dix range in the Adirondacks. We received the pack a week before our trip and took it for a few test runs. She is an extremely agile jumper, and the pack barely wavered the entire hike. The belly strap and handle on the top of the pack were ESSENTIAL for lifting and passing our dog to friends during the descent. Each saddlebag holds an impressive amount of gear, and I can finally have my girl carry her own poop. The pack reflection at night is another great feature. We hiked back to trailhead in the dark and she lit up the woods. Go buy this pack NOW!

Front Range Day Pack is the best!!

By Julian F.

We took our dogs out on a hike yesterday. We went through creeks, up rocks, down hills and through mud. The day pack held up beautifully. First things first, the packs on each side need to be filled to about the same weight or the pack will start to lean one way. I expected this and honestly even if the pack did not lean I would fill each pocket equally to even out the weight on my dogs back. Once the straps were nice and snug and each pack was equally filled i never had to mess with it again...

Day Pack
The Front Range Day Pack incorporates Ruffwear's signature radial cut saddlebags with the customer-favorite Front Range Harness platform, making it an everyday pack staple in any dog's gear closet. Dogs can help shoulder the load thanks to the integrated padded harness and belly strap that adjust for exceptional fit and pack stability.

The saddlebag geometry creates a passive compression system that is formfitting and supports efficient load carrying. There are three leash attachment options: a V-ring and a tow loop on the back, and a reinforced webbing loop on the chest - great for redirecting dogs that pull when on leash.

With plenty of internal organization and trail-minded details, this comfortable day pack equips dogs to carry the day's provisions on hikes and frontcountry pursuits.
