Almost perfect

The bottle pockets in the back are useless, because it makes bottles unaccessible und moves the center of gravity in an inconvenient way. They need to be moved to the sides like standard backpacks. No complaints aside from that. Perfect carry on backpack for long/minimalist travels.

Great backpack with a few odd choices

My wife and I used the Fairview / Fairpoint as our only bags for 2 weeks and 4 cities across Italy. These bags held everything we needed and allowed us easy movement while using trains, planes, bus and cars to get around. We didn't bring laptops (just a tablet) but others have commented the laptop sleeve is not against your back and I agree it would be better there. Similarly the mesh water bottle sleeves are useless when bag is fully packed and compression straps are tight. I just used a small clip on bottle and problem solved. Packing cubes highly recommended. Have used these for long weekends and it holds up just as well. I won't go back to checked bags ever again. One additional item- I needed a short extender for the hip belt and Osprey sent not one but two 6 inch extensions with clips for no charge.

Awesome backpack and lots of room

Awesome backpack very well constructed and should last for years. Haven't had a chance to use it for the travel telescope I got it for but I'm sure it will be more than adequate. I went on a snowboard trip and packed bindings, clothing and other gear in case my luggage was lost I'd have what I need to hit the slopes. Laptop compartment is easy to get to and seems to be protective even though it's on the outside of the bag. Plenty of room to pack for a week if you have access to laundry and should be OK for a carry on even on smaller planes.

It works for me

Bought this while on 20% sale, got the red one. I love this pack just from its look, the red color is awesome. I'm an underwater photgrapher who have been looking a perfect pack for carrying my camera, lenses, its housing and my laptop. The pack I've been looking for should be large enough to carry above items, but not too bulky as a carry-on luggage. Stumbled upon this pack while I was 'window shopping' at the Eiger store in my home town, attracted to its color and the discounted price. Tested it for stuffing all the camera gears and laptop, it fits nicely...even I still have plenty of spaces for other accessories. There you go...it's now become my carry-on pack when I'm traveling for diving. In summary: this pack has awesome look, enough for my needs, looks very sturdy. The harness system is very comfortable. It's defintely not designed for a long day hike, but it's doing its job for a short walk between airport terminals and gates. This pack can fit most of aircraft overhead bin, even in an ATR 600. The placement of laptop compartment probably not the most secure position, but you could stuff a thin fleece jacket in the front compartment to give extra protection from bump, and it has lockable zips too. However, you should pack your stuffs properly in the main compartment to make sure the laptop compartment remain flat (the internal compression straps should do the job). Downside: you need to buy raincover for this (you want to keep this beautiful bag clean..right?), and the placement of ID tag is not very smart. You might need to find a right water bottle if you want to have a perfect fit for the ackward mesh pockets.

Great Bag

Excellent bag. This is my favorite for trips. Very comfortable to carry. I wish Osprey would do the following: 1. Add laptop sleeve on the back 2. Fix water bottle holders on the front which are useless. Nothing fits in there once the bag is packed. 3. Add carry straps on the bottom to strap in additional gear. 4. Make mesh panel a little deeper.

Might be the best, but can't give it 5-stars

I've had this pack for years and use it often on pleasure/business trips. It fits in the overhead and holds clothes/shoes for days. Stowing the shoulder straps and hip-belt is ingenious, and it clears the "clutter" that gate agents may take for an oversize bag. When they are stashed, there are several padded handles that are well located so you can carry it like a suitcase. But, I am disappointed the fabric has ripped in two locations where the handles are sewn to the bag. Better reinforcing could have been placed at those critical junctions. I've wanted to send back for repair, but use it so much that I haven't found the time. The main compartment is roomy, and there are two compression straps. I use packing cubes, and if you don't, you will find your items move around as the straps only do so much (with or without cubes). Shoes can go at the bottom for balance. On the underside of the main flap, there is a mesh divider, and that can be handy to separate out folded dress shirts so they don't get too wrinkled. The exterior pocket is padded for a laptop, but like many have stated, you are taking a risk putting an electronic in it. It isn't for lack of padding, but for bending caused by the bowing of the bag when you pack the main compartment. The padding is quite thick, but is is essentially just taking up room since folks don't feel comfortable placing a laptop in it. Use the mesh pockets on the outside at your own risk. A water bottle will not stay, regardless of what the photos show, And having to wrap the compression strap over the mesh pockets (whether full or not) means you have to unhook them to take something out. Speaking of which, one of my buckles cracked and that too needs replacing now. I have lost shampoo, soap, etc. from those pockets and not even realized it. It is a great pack, but there must be improvement of basic things (handle/fabric connection, mesh exterior pockets, buckle strength, laptop location) before giving 5-stars!

Hands Down Best Backpack Best Company Ever

I've had this backpack for 3 years now. I've been all over Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East, North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Hands down the best backpack ever! I bought the S/M version so I think it's only 38L which is still plenty of room. I've thrown this backpack on buses, trains, in the trunk of cars, everywhere. It's tough as nails. One of the best things I like about this backpack is the eyelets on the zippers. These are perfect for a lock which I use all the time. It's a great deterrent when staying in hostels also, although I've never had a problem. Recently, I was forced to check my backpack as luggage on a flight with Spirit Airlines (first time I've ever checked my backpack as luggage). Unfortunately, someone maliciously cut off my lock and destroyed the zipper eyelets. Osprey, with no questions, sent me a new set of zipper eyelets at no charge and they paid for shipping! I'd highly recommend the Farpoint 40. But if you choose something else, make sure you purchase from Osprey. You won't be disappointed!

Excellent pack for both short and long trips

I really, really like this pack. I've had mine for 1.5 years and have probably spent about 40 nights traveling during that time by plane, train, taxi, and foot. The bag has held up great overtime with very minimal signs of wear. I can fit about 4-5 days worth cold-weather clothes in packing cubes this bag, along with an extra pair of shoes and all other toiletries, snacks, and whatnot. On trips longer than that, I just do laundry. If I could make one change, it would be better inner organization pockets. My packing cubes help, but the front pocket becomes a major black hole. I do recommend trying this bag on. I'm a medium frame 5'5 woman, and the s/m Farpoint fits me much better than the women's specific version. The same pack fits my 5'11 husband.

Love it

Very comfortable & easy to adjust to my body. It fit everything I needed for a week. Fits perfectly in overhead bin. Best part is the zippered cover for the straps - keeps everything neat when I stow the pack. Other family members bought one after our trip. Easier to carry on back vs wheeled carry on, especially on cobblestone roads

Hiking Backpack Technology for Travel Luggage

The Farpoint 40 is my first backpack travel luggage. I chose it for the combination of proper backpack features and satisfactory interior space. I used it on a 7-day vacation in Japan (a place with stunning fall season color, BTW). My loaded 20-lb. pack was balanced and comfortable on my 5'11" body. There are features of a quality hiking backpack: a stable but lightweight frame, contoured shoulder harnesses featuring load lifter straps that prevent sagging away from your back, sternum strap and hip belt that perfectly transfers weight away from the shoulders. I had a comfortable, hands-free trek through an airport terminal, onto a monorail, up and down subway stairs and along a half mile of sidewalk to my hotel. I'll never drag along rolling carry-on luggage again. Inside the main compartment, I fit four days worth of clothing: a pair of shoes, shirts/pants in one large and one medium Osprey packing cubes, sweater, rain jacket, and small items like underwear, eyeglass cases and belts. The TSA-approved one-quart bag of toiletries fit in the external front zip pocket. With the main compartment filled, the middle pockets for a laptop computer and other items get compressed, but I fit slim items like travel documents and the detachable shoulder strap. That strap is actually convenient to quickly carry the pack at your side in the airport gate, and when boarding aircraft and trains. I love how the harness can be folded under a secure, zippered panel to streamline the pack in an aircraft cabin overhead compartment or when checking luggage on a small regional jet. To stow the harness behind the panel, loosen the load lifter straps so the shoulder harnesses fold flat -- otherwise they stick out and don't compress. I am happy with this pack. I rated it four instead of five stars because the zippers are not high-quality YKK, so their long-term durability is unknown. Also, the Volcanic Grey color is actually a greenish-gray, NOT the true charcoal gray pictured online.

2 Weeks in Europe

This backpack was a key part in my 2 week trip across Europe. This was the only main travel bag I had. I had no issues using this as my carry on even when using international flights within Europe (i.e. Ryan Air). I was able to put it under my chair or above head perpendicularly which was great. I loved the option to change it from a back pack to a duffel bag by zippering in the straps. This was especially convenient when getting on and off trains. I would zip the straps in and carry the bag in front of me as a sort of guide when maneuvering through people. This prevented the straps from hitting people and the backpack not hitting people if I had been wearing it. I still use this backpack for normal weekend get aways and it's been two years since I bought it and there isn't a single sign of wear and tear. And that's not an exaggeration. Not even a single scuff mark on it. The one and only complaint I have is the mesh water bottle holders. Because they are in the front, there's a lot of tension on the mesh. I always had a difficult time getting my Nalgene bottle in the holder. My water bottle often popped out so I would have to use the cross buckle straps to loop it through the water bottle handle so that it wouldn't fall out. Overall, great quality and strong material design.

The Osprey Fairpoint 40 and Sunny Sports are the best!!!

It's looks great. It's seems to a little bigger than I thought, which is awesome. I love the fact that it can be used as a carry on. I have to say that sunny sports was AWESOME!!!! They had an unbelievable price! The gentleman that helped knew his stuff and was a great help. Shipping was great, I actually got it a day earlier than anticipated.

Great design

Packs a lot. Very functional design, except that with laptop in the far end would make it tough to pack to its full potential. Great for a week of travel and don't check-in. I love it.

Modifying this pack to make it perfect

Cons: no accessible pockets while wearing. Be practical and sew a thin fabric pocket on the right hip strap to drop your phone in. Add a matching one on the left for your super skinny wallet. Straps too long: measure, cut and sear the new ends of the straps to reduce the number of dangling leashes. Remove entirely the inside compression straps. Your pack will always be full and contents will not shift. No one who finds y our lost pack will EVER find the name/address pocket rolled up and hidden in bottom cavity. Sew a name/address patch on the Osprey logo black tongue inside the laptop section. It will quickly be discovered by anyone who finds your pack.

Almost perfect for hiking the Camino de Santiago

Before hiking the Camino for two weeks last month, I researched travel packs extensively. This one is the best, even with the Cons I have listed. Other reviewers noted the water bottle issue. Packing with two medium cubes really helped keeping my pack organized. Four and a half stars!

I never use anything else for travel

I own three Osprey packs but this was my first and it's been with me everywhere. I have taken it to India twice, once for two weeks and once for 2 whole months. I''m about to take it to India again. I've also used it for several shorter domestic trips as well as simply a weekender bag. It has held up great. There are some signs of scuffing and a few small tears but that's to be expected. I used it both as a carry-on only and checked bag when it was too heavy for carry-on in domestic flights within India. I have always been able to pack everything I needed in this bag. I think the biggest plus are the internal compression straps. This makes it possible to pack so much more than you would think. I have the S/M which is technically only 38 liters but I can tell you I haven't missed those last two liters at all. The hip strap is also vital for when the pack becomes really full but it works like a dream. As others have said, the position of the laptop compartment isn't great and can make packing difficult if you are trying to pack to capacity after a long trip and you have several souvenirs you're trying to get home. I think if they ever redesign this bag with the laptop compartment against the back, they'll have THE perfect all around travel bag for one bag/minimalist travel.

Best travel pack

I bought this in anticipation of a two-week trip because I wanted something a little bigger than my North Face pack. I can't say enough good things about the Farpoint 40. To give a little perspective on the use, I traveled with my two young kids and husband and we spent two weeks traveling in SE Asia. We visited 6 countries and took 12 flights. Needless to say, we packed and unpacked a LOT. My husband was jealous of my pack (enough that he inherited mine and I bought the Fairview 40 when we returned) because it fit things SO well and is exceptionally accessible, without looking like you're carrying a suitcase on your back. We flew on United, Cebu Pacific, Lion Air, Air Asia, and Air Mauritius. I'm 5'11" so am picky about leg room, but this pack fit well under the seat on every plane (I tried it before placing overhead, just to see), including the three budget airlines, plus fit with ease in the overhead bins. I easily fit three eBags small packing cubes (11 x 6.75 x 3) inside and secured by the Farpoint's inner compression straps, plus a pair of flip-flops, electronics, a LectroFan white noise machine (ridiculous, I know), and toiletries bag. Still had plenty of room. I suppose if you overpacked this, it would be hard to fit under the seat, but I honestly had zero problems. I'll keep recommending this pack to everyone, it's awesome.

Excellent product; very please, a few minor suggestions

I bought this pack primarily for business travel to replace a rolling suitcase, knowing I would use it for leisure as well. Excellent concept, design and execution. Very durable; I've loaded it very heavily with no issues. Ideal for remaining hands-free in airport lines. Absolutely fits in every overhead bin I've tried. The pack is comfortable and roomy (I'm constantly surprised at how much I can load into mine. A few minor gripes: the interior compression straps work great but can get lost while packing; the exterior mesh pockets could be a bit roomier for a water bottle, etc but the exterior compression straps hold everything in; I find the partitions in the laptop pocket to be superfluous; exterior pockets on the side would be handy. Final note: I thought I would use the zipper cover over the straps but I don't; it's just not convenient before boarding, etc. I do use the overly large storage pocket for the cover for other items like my rain jacket, laptop charger, etc. as I find the Velcro closure very secure.

Best bag I've ever bought

I bought this bag for a round the world trip with my boyfriend. I bought him the same bag for the trip because it was so good. We've saved hundreds of Euros on flights because these bags fit as hand luggage on all flights. Not only that, 3 months into my trip I broke my foot and had to use two crutches for 6 weeks. The bag was so well fitted and neat that I was actually able to carry it with my two crutches no problem!

Great Bag. Amazing Warranty Service.

This is a great bag. It has fit on all airlines as a carry-on, never had issues in that regard. The bag opens up very wide, and is easy to pack. It works well with packing cubes, and the compression straps along the outside are great to cinch the bag down. I have used it for camping, weekend trips, day hikes, 4-5 day backpacking trips (in moderate climate). The bag is great. The only complaint is that the laptop pouch is not heavily padded, and just seems as though it may bend the laptop if the bag were to be too full.

Good quality pack

My partner and I bought these packs over 2 years ago now. They still look brand new, despite using them quite a lot. We have the large size (42 Litres). This size is perfect for us, and we intend on using them when we travel full time. I only have a few issues with this bag. 1. The laptop compartment is at the front of the bag. This changes how the weight is distributed. It should be against your back. 2. The water bottle holders at the front are pretty useless. If your bag isn't completely full, you can use them. But with the straps going over the top, it's still not very convenient or secure. 3. I wish there were more compartments for little pieces. Apart from those issues, I love these bags and do recommend them.

Great backpack

I was looking for a travel backpack for some time, first was looking for wheeled backpacks but found it kind of not being practical for me, i do quiet a bit of business and leisure travel a year (5-8 times) and well aware of a good backpack or carry-on pros & cons. finally i came to decide between this backpack and eagle creek 40 liter one and chose this, really like it.

Good but lack of updates over the years says look elsewhere

I use this for business travel for 5+ years. Great for carry-on in the USA can go overhead or under the seat even when full. I also use this to travel to China with 2 weeks of clothes (packing experts only). Comfortable for broad shoulders, but cannot remove/put away the hip belt when using the shoulder straps which gets in the way (must always fold them under after mounting the pack). The outside water bottle holders don't work for me when the pack is full. The metal frame is wonderful and is very comfortable on my back. The zippers have held up under stress, but they always feel subpar compared to my other packs with premium YKK zippers that seem to get better with use. Overall I recommend this pack for airline travel, but the fact Osprey has not updated this pack over the years means I will pass on it when my current one wears out (starting to wear out now with material rips).

Osprey's Farpoint 40 is perfect for a weekend getaway in the city or the wilderness. The LightWire frame suspension transfers the load from harness to hipbelt. A mesh backpanel improves ventilation and the mesh on the harness and hipbelt reduces chafing under load. The entire suspension stows away under a zippered panel creating a sleek silhouette for transport.

Unzip the lockable sliders to access the main compartment. Inside there's a mesh pocket for small items. Dual compression straps keep cargo from shifting during transit.

Outside you'll find a zippered front panel slash pocket to keep you organized and sewn attachment points to lash on extra gear. No matter how much you choose to carry, StraightJacket compression straps stabilize the load. The padded top and side handles give you purchase when you need to toss the Farpoint 40 into the back of the bus.
