This is my third shovel

This is my third shovel from MSR. They are super tough and very handy to carry one in each vehicle or side by side. I use it for snow and ice but also works as a coal shovel, stone shovel, ash shovel. I highly recommend everyone having one.

Small enough to stow away in a backpack but big enough to handle a large snowdrift.

Workhorse Shovel

I picked this up to use for backcountry ski patrolling. So far, it seems like a really decent, durable piece of equipment. I like the attachment points on the blade. While I have not yet used it to construct a rescue sled, I can certainly envision it being very functional in this application. Like most things MSR, it is bright red and would be difficult to lose. I wish it had a hoe-mode, however the angle on the blade is a bit sharper than other shovels so it may not even be necessary. On the down side, it may not be ergonomically ideal for shovel tests in snow pits. Finally, the shaft seems quite durable and is adequately long when extended. It is essentially triangular with rounded edges. It could potentially be put into the blade at the wrong angle (rotated 120 degrees) which may cost precious extra seconds in an emergency, however I suppose this seems unlikely. Overall, I see this as a highly functional shovel for the price and I would certainly recommend it to others.

Super light without sacrificing performance.

Lighter than the other shovels I've seen used on mountaineering / snow camping trips and works every bit as well. The little design elements on the business end of the shovel are nice touches too.

I bought 2 and have no regrets!

This shovel is awesome! First day I had it, we got a 12 inch snow storm here in VT and my car got stuck in the snow. Thanks to the angle of the shovel head and aggressive teeth this shovel moves snow like it was nothing. After I dug out my car, I built a huge fort with my daughter. She loved it, and said ""This is exactly what I have always wanted!"" My wife also requested I buy her one. Great weight and well made materials. Nothing surprising coming from MSR. The shovel head comes off for relatively easy packing.

Solid construction.

Bought this for the occasional backcountry trip and as a shovel in the back of the SUV when I get stuck on the back roads or have to dig someone else out. Purchased the D-handle version. Haven't used it in a rescue situation yet, but it feels good in the hand and ready for the job.

Snow Shovel

spoke with an MSR engineer (friend of mine) who recommended the Operator Shovel. Glad he did. Its perfect. Highly recommended. I have lots of other MSR gear (snowshoes, stove, fuel bottles, water filtration bottle, etc) and this snow shovel continues your reputation for superb engineering.

The MSR Operator D-Handle snow shovel -well made!

The MSR Operator Backcountry and Basecamp D-Handle Snow Shovel is a well made and excellent product to use. It is very easy to use this shovel to break up ice and snow, and move snow and dig. It is durable, an you do not get tired using it. It only weighs a little more than 1 pound. It is comfortable to use, and the aluminum design is very good. It comes in as very useful and is just a durable, excellent and all around well made appealing snow shovel.
