Snowshoeing is a fantastic way to get out and enjoy the great outdoors during frosty winter months. If skiing and snowboarding aren’t your speed, or on in-between days for a change of scenery, snowshoeing provides great exercise at a more subdued pace.

Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages can enjoy this low-impact, heart-healthy exercise no matter how much snow is on the ground. This popular winter sport also requires less gear than many others, so it’s easy to get started on a budget.

Types of snowshoes

There are a few different types of snowshoes to choose from. Each variety is ideal for slightly different uses and conditions.

Flat terrain snowshoes are the simplest type, and they’re designed for more casual or inexperienced snowshoers. They often have a lower price tag and are easy to take off and put on.

Rolling terrain snowshoes work well in both flat terrain and in areas with a moderate slope. They often include crampons for extra traction on hills and a heel lift for improved balance on uneven terrain.

You can wear mountain-terrain snowshoes in much steeper or icier conditions. They are more expensive, but they have a rugged crampon system and you can wear them with heavy boots. Plus, they usually include heel lifts.

Running snowshoes are much more lightweight than other varieties. They’re typically worn by those who want to maintain a faster speed for a more intense workout.

Helpful features in snowshoes

Snowshoes have come a long way in the past two decades. In the past, most models were very simple and made of wood or wicker. But today they feature strong, yet lightweight, metal alloys and useful features to support your feet, help you glide comfortably, and protect you in deeper snow.

Contemporary snowshoes, like new models by TSL, feature grips on the front and sides of the platform for better traction and reduced slip regardless of incline. Many models by Tubbs include useful shock absorption features and advanced torsion decks for better adaptability to any conditions.
