On March 22, 1993, the United Nations General Assembly declared that day would be a day for global observance from then on: the World Day for Water. On this day, the UN devotes particular attention to the state of the planet’s water resources, and its member nations cooperate by implementing UN suggestions for promoting water conservation within their countries. As World Water Day has gathered more attention through the years, members of the general public will refrain from using tap water for the entire day as a show of solidarity. The day is meant to impress upon people how precious water is as a resource, and the many thousands of ways it is wasted — but can also be saved — according to our preferences.
