Since 2008, there has been an increased demand for rhino horns in several countries worldwide, primarily those in Asia. This has led to the upsurge of rhino poaching in Africa where these magnificent animals are found. Initially, rhino poaching was not terribly challenging since it was often done as a sport, which was later suppressed by illegalization in countries that were affected. Things worsened when rhino horns became of commercial importance in many Asian countries. A rhino horn on the black market is currently estimated to be valued at around $45,000. The astronomical price of the horns only encourages poachers to employ all possible methods to attain this incredibly valuable item.
Common Schemes of Rhino Poaching
This unscrupulous trade is normally orchestrated by very influential buccaneers, who often bribe the rangers who act as custodians of the endangered animals. These unethical game rangers allow them to poach rhinos irregularly in the game reserves in exchange for hefty bribes. Curbing poaching has been very challenging due to the prevalence of “inside jobs” taking place in the very areas that were created to protect rhinos from this threat.
If rangers cannot be compromised, poaching is also executed through the use of force. Heavily armed poachers storm game parks and kill rangers who might be an obstacle to their illegal activities. Rhinos are slaughtered, their horns chopped off and later smuggled to their destination, while their carcasses are left to rot.

Measures to Curb Poaching
Regulations have been initiated by the affected countries in an attempt to curb rhino poaching. For instance, South Africa, which harbors 93 percent of white rhinos and 40 percent of black rhinos, has enacted strict laws banning poaching with serious punishments for poachers, and security at game reserves has been tightened. Rhinos have also been fitted with trackers to enable digital surveillance on them in the wilderness. In case any suspicion is detected, the rangers are able to locate the animal fast and foil any attempt on its life.

Remedy
All countries, particularly those in which the demand for rhino horns exists, should help in curbing poaching of this rare animal through banning of the trade altogether. Countries harboring the rhinos should secure their parks at all costs. Education and awareness of not only rhinos, but the terrible plight they face, should be widespread and commonplace. By enacting a few safeguards and getting the public involved, rhinos may be able to enjoy a longer existence on Earth than the one currently afforded them.
