Hiking with dogs is not only enjoyable for the pet, but also for the owner. The two are able to bond while encouraging the other to stay active, healthy, and fit. While just about any dog can learn how to hike, there are a few rules and precautions that should be followed so both the animal and the owner stay safe on their trip.
Before Taking The Dog On A Hike
While nearly all dogs love walks, hiking is a different experience. Animals will come across other creatures, unfamiliar surroundings, lakes, mountainous terrain and much more. Because of this, the animal has to be properly trained before ever steeping foot in unknown territory.
Basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come, are essential when hiking. Hiking with dogs also means that they will constantly be distracted, so strong listening skills are a must. The pet should also be properly leashed trained even if they won’t be wearing it during the walk. Finally, it’s a smart idea for owners to expose their pet to multiple environments before the first hike. For example, the breed basenji is known for its dislike of crossing water. This could be problematic if not known about before starting the hike.
Hiking with dogs is enjoyable, but some preparation is required. Every trail will have its own amenities and challenges, but hikers should prepare based on the assumption that there won’t be any food or water available. It’s recommended that at least 3 gallons of water be carried and shared among the pair, and hikers will need to include a bowl for the dog to drink from. Hikers will also be burning more calories, which means extra meals and snacks should be packed. Beef jerky and nuts can be shared safely among human and dog, but anything contain raisins or dried fruits should be avoided for the safety of your pet.
Even if the hike is meant to be short, there should be at least a day worth of water and food. If that’s too much weight for one person to carry, specially designed dog backpacks can be purchased so pets can share a portion of the load.
