In the bid to reconfigure the 7 natural wonders of the world, hundreds of submissions were narrowed down to just 28, and among them was the underground river of Puerto Princesa, on the Philippine island of Palawan.

This astonishing river is located within a limestone mountain landscape, and stretches more than 5 miles through an immense cave system before spilling out into the South China Sea.

Many important geological discoveries have been made here, including minerals and formations never seen elsewhere in the world. Most interesting is the discovery of a perfectly preserved fossil of a sirenian, or manatee, from 20 million years ago.

The river is completely navigable, and tours are available. Check out this video that highlights the beauty of the Puerto Princesa Underground River.
