The US National Park Service is celebrating its 100th birthday this year, making this an excellent time to lace up your hiking boots or load up the camping gear and head into one of the nation’s many parks. Shenandoah National Park is one that stands out due to its large populations of wildlife, as well as its picturesque location in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia.

With over 200,000 acres of land within its borders, Shenandoah is home to large herds of deer, rabbits, red foxes, otters, bobcats, and the largest concentration of black bears in the US. There are also more than 800 varieties of wildflowers, meaning there are blossoms year round. July is blackberry season, and bushes are bursting with this tart and tasty treat.

Loads of hiking opportunities await at Shenandoah National Park. Check out this video to learn more about the history of this park and how it came into existence.
