A campfire is always one of the nicest features of camping, creating an inviting, warm space that brings us all together. Thanks to BioLite, you can enjoy the warmth of a campfire and even cook your meals while charging your devices with the BioLite FirePit!

BioLite hit the outdoor scene in 2012 with their first product, the BioLite CampStove, which utilizes wood fuel to create not only a smokeless fire, but thermoelectric energy to charge devices with as well. The two founders of BioLite bonded over a mutual interest in sustainable design and a desire to offer solutions to energy impoverished areas of the world that don’t rely on fossil fuels.

Because of the way the BioLite stoves are designed, less fuel is needed to create the same effect of a propane stove, and smoke is all but eliminated due to the fuel being used more efficiently. BioLite stoves also incorporate a multi-speed fan inside the battery pack that stokes the flames to create more heat, and thus more energy for charging. These stoves are a boon for backpackers who a) want to stay as connected as possible while they trek, and b) not have to worry about packing space for fuel canisters.

The BioLite FirePit is different in a few ways. It’s much bigger, and has two racks inside: a high rack for charcoal and a low rack for firewood. This model is designed to do double duty as a grill and a campfire, going from grilling to gazing by simply adding cut firewood to the charcoal embers. Constructed from 360-degree X-Ray Mesh, the entire contents of the fire will be visible to everyone at any position, without the hassle of smoke chasing everyone down in a twisted game of Musical Chairs.

Like other BioLite stoves, the BioLite FirePit includes a battery pack that powers a fan that efficiently regulates fuel consumption. However, this battery pack is not recharged by the heat created by the fire as it is in the stove models, but it is easy to recharge by connecting it to any power source via USB cable. You’ll still have the charging capabilities of the battery pack while in use as long as it is sufficiently charged.

The BioLite FirePit is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, with 15 days left in the campaign. The project has already exceeded its funding goal, but there are still some pretty sweet rewards you can get in on. For $199, you’ll get the BioLite FirePit and the Solar Carry Cover, which has an integrated solar panel to charge the battery pack as it sits in the sun.
