Oregon is renown for its diversity of climates and landscapes, from coastal old growth forests to stunning high deserts. There are many sites to choose from in Oregon that are suitable for many types of outdoor activities, but few can lay claim to having something for everyone the way Smith Rock State Park does. Located near the small town of Terrebonne, in the heart of Oregon, Smith Rock State Park is home to one of the most unique geological formations in the world, which lends itself brilliantly to the sport of rock climbing. More than 1,500 climbing routes have been established here, nearly 1,000 of which are permanently bolted to aid climbers of all experience levels as they make their way to the summit. Miles of hiking trails wind around and up the namesake rock, snaking along the Crooked River and treating hikers to sweeping vistas of the Cascade Mountain Range. Anglers can get in on the action as well, with long stretches of waterways to spend the day fly fishing. Because of its desert locale, extreme temperatures in the summer and winter can be intimidating, making this incredible natural playground best visited in spring or fall. Whatever your outdoor ambitions may be, you’re sure to find an outlet at Smith Rock State Park.
