Camping sometimes means giving up a few creature comforts…like bathing. Never fear! Here are some smart outdoor uses for cornstarch powder that will keep you smelling sweet in the wilderness. Note: Due to recent health warnings about talc, it is recommended that you use cornstarch or baby powder rather than talcum.

1. Prevent chafing

Don’t forget to pack the cornstarch powder to help deal with the discomforts that come with extended walking or sweaty activity. Use on inner thighs, under arms — anywhere body parts rub against each other — to reduce friction.

2. Counteract stinky feet

Sprinkle some powder in your boots after a hike to absorb moisture and odors. Just shake it out in the morning to banish odor. Rub some powder onto your feet before bedtime to freshen them up and cool them down.

3. Sand-free feet

Sprinkling some powder on your feet helps loosen and remove sand much easier than just brushing it off with your hands. If your campout or hike is on the shore, this will be especially useful.

4. Cool your bed

Camping in the summer heat can make sleeping uncomfortable. Sprinkle some cornstarch powder into your sleeping bag or on you bedroll a few minutes before bed for a cooler slumber.

5. Banish ants

A bit of cornstarch powder around your campsite can keep ants away. They won’t cross over the powder, giving you pesticide free protection for your food and bedding.

6. Cool down and freshen up

Powdering your skin can relieve the heat, absorb oils and sweat, and give you a fresh scent. You can even use it to lessen some of the funk in sweaty clothing. Despite its absorbing powers, cornstarch powder also works well to soothe dry, irritated skin. Remember these smart uses for cornstarch powder and pack some for every camping trip.

7. Dry shampoo

If you’re roughing it in a shower-free campground, there’s no need to deal with greasy hair for the duration of your trip. Sprinkle some powder on your comb and run it through your hair, especially the roots. You can even use your hands in a pinch. The powder absorbs oils, leaving your hair feeling clean and smelling fresh. It will show more in dark hair so, if the look bothers you, you can add a little cocoa powder or cinnamon to counter the white.
