From the tiny house to the teardrop trailer, smaller is getting better and better. Many designers and companies are answering the call for these “less is more” products, and a lot of buyers are eager to pack the maximum of usefulness into a compact space. Now, a New Zealand company has put a micro spin on the teardrop trailer concept with its launch of a solar powered camper.
Called the Ecombo, this rustproof aluminum caravan looks something like a shrunken box trailer/food truck, but its squared design features all the comforts of home, just on a smaller scale. This rugged, all terrain camper holds a full sized bed, a large side window, and handy storage compartments. The roof vent couples with the window to provide great air flow on the inside.
With the bedroom on one side, there is a galley kitchen on the other. Featuring a stove, sink, prep counter, and a small fridge, you’ll have everything you need to whip up that evening meal or a tasty breakfast. While there is no room for a bathroom aboard the Ecombo, there are water tanks for both fresh and grey water, as well as water hookups where you can attach a portable toilet or outdoor shower. There are also optional features like a bike rack, and a tent extension that expands the living space to 269 square feet.
This tidy towable comes with its own power supply in the form of roof mounted 100 watt photovoltaic panels and a 130 Ah battery. The battery powers the LED lights and appliances in the trailer. At 2,425 pounds, the trailer may seem a bit heavy for its size but it packs a lot inside the small space. While currently only available in New Zealand, the Ecombo is sure to inspire other companies to offer similar products to eager, eco-conscious consumers worldwide. Solar powered campers could be the wave of the future for outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy communing with nature but are not too keen on leaving all their creature comforts at home.
