Spending time in the great outdoors gardening, barbecuing, or camping with the family is one of the best features of the summer season. However, these months are also synonymous with an uptick of pesky and annoying insects. Thankfully, there are a number of useful methods of repelling insects that anyone can utilize. Let’s take a look at five of the most efficient methods.
Chemical Repellents

Chemicals are the most common method of repelling insects in the world. The DEET chemical is the most effective of these and can give up to 10 hours of protection. However, it should be noted that these chemicals can be harmful to the body after being sprayed, which is why they should be used sparingly and safely.
Natural Repellents

There are also a large number of natural repellents that work well to keep insects away. The best of these insect repellants is the oil that can be found in lemon eucalyptus plants. Other common oils such as citronella, peppermint and castor can ward off insects as well.
Repellent Clothing

Surprisingly enough, insect-repellent clothing does actually exist and can be found in many outdoor stores. This type of clothing utilizes what is known as permethrin, a sort of chemical that works in the same way that DEET does. When applied to the clothing, it should last for quite some time — at least one whole summer — before it naturally wears off of the clothing. You can also buy a concentrate and treat your clothing yourself.
Handheld Bug Zappers

Though not quite the most effective, handheld bug zappers, which look similar to tennis rackets, are a simple and easy method of repelling insects and can be transported anywhere. While they work well for killing any type of insect they touch, they can eliminate insects that are actually useful too, so be careful where you swing that thing!
Electric Fans

While it may not be readily apparent, electric fans can act as a pretty efficient insect repellent, due to the fact that the breeze generated by the fan will knock most insects off course and keep them away. They also help to eliminate any common odors surrounding a person that usually attracts insects. Small camping fans are very affordable and can even be operated with solar power!
