There are many different varieties of praying mantis, widely known for their somewhat alien appearance. The remarkable orchid mantis displays bright colors of black and orange when young, but makes a curious metamorphosis as it matures.

Adult orchid mantises so closely resemble their namesake flowers that, when they were first observed, they were thought to have been carnivorous plants. White and pink in color, the insect is nearly indistinguishable from the flower. Their flat, heart-shaped legs resemble petals, helping them to blend in seamlessly amongst the blossoms.

In a battle for survival, who will triumph when a tiny praying mantis goes up against a much larger jumping spider? Get the answer by watching this fascinating video. Shot in stunning detail, you’ll be up close and personal with this colorful orchid mantis nymph, one that has a few tricks of self defense up its sleeve.
