ethical beauty productsIt’s a topic that can start a polarizing debate. From chemicals in the products to testing on animals, the makeup and skincare industry frequently comes under fire from the ecologically minded. Even if you eschew makeup, taking care of your outer shell is still part of your inner well being. So, what is the environmentally conscious person to do to balance their love for the planet with their lust for luscious lips? Here are just a few tips to help you choose ethical beauty products.

Check a label, save a critter: If a manufacturer does not use animal testing they are going to — pardon the pun — crow about it. It will be clearly shown on the package that they don’t harm our furry friends in the making and testing of their products.

Natural ingredients, naturally: Food based ingredients are nothing new in the beauty industry, and there’s a reason for that. Long before we had unpronounceable chemicals, items derived from the natural world were what women turned to for their beauty needs. Pomegranate seeds for lip color, milk baths, charcoal eyeliner were all common items on the ancient vanity stand. Today’s modern makeup aisle features products made with grape seed, olive oil, honey, and coconut oil, to name a few. Look for organic products that use nature instead of a lab for their base ingredients.

Shop at home, or close to it: Cottage industries are a great source for organic, homegrown, purely made beauty products. By buying local, you’re supporting small businesses and reducing carbon emissions by getting something that doesn’t have to be packaged and transported across the country to reach your medicine cabinet.

This means less plastic going into landfills and waterways. Larger jars can be reused or tiny ones can be recycled along with your other household items.

And these tips are not just for the ladies — men need good skincare, too! The same ingredients that bring your gal pal a healthy glow can keep you fellas looking just as good, and feeling good about your choices.
