So, you’ve made plans to go camping this weekend, but a sudden change in weather foils your plans. Camping in the rain doesn’t have to be a showstopper — in fact, it can present a fun challenge if you take the necessary steps to prepare.
Track the Storm

One of the most important things to pack for camping in the rain is a way to keep track of current conditions. As everyone knows, weather can change in an instant.
Whether it be a cellphone or a weather radio, be sure to include something that allows you to monitor what’s happening in your area. If you’re going to rely on a cellphone, you’ll need to adjust your plan to stay within areas that receive a signal.
Stay Dry

One of the most important considerations when camping in the rain is staying dry. Appropriate clothing is a must, which means multiple layers of lightweight, moisture-wicking, quick-drying materials. Avoid cotton-only layers, as they soak quickly and dry slowly. Rain ponchos are cheap and take up very little space. It’s a smart idea to always have one for each camper packed into your camping gear.
But keeping yourself dry is just one concern — you’ll likely want to keep most of your gear dry as well. Make sure all non-waterproof items are packed into plastic bags or airtight containers. For electronic gadgets, little packets of silica gel desiccant will keep condensation from building up inside watertight cases.
When searching for a place to pitch tent, it’s important to know which locations will keep you dry. Water runs downward, so avoid placing your tent on a downhill slope — certainly not at the bottom of one! Look for high ground and ensure there are no places where water can pool. Bring tarps to place both above and below your tent for extra protection from the elements, and if you expect a lot of rain, dig a trench around your tent that will help direct water flow away. You can gather a bed of pine needles and leaves to create a cushy barrier between the ground and tarp for even more insulation from the wet and cold.
Camping in the rain doesn’t have to ruin a fun weekend. With a little common sense and forethought, the extra challenge of enduring normally undesirable conditions can give you a well-earned sense of accomplishment!
