Time to get that bike tuned up! The East Coast Greenway Alliance, a non-profit organization promoting cycling, is creating the East Coast Greenway, a 2,900-mile trail from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida. The trail will be devoted to cyclists, as well as walkers and runners, offering a one-of-a kind mode of traffic-free travel.
While the concept has been envisioned since the early 1990s, last year was catalytic in pushing the project forward. By creating new initiatives and strengthening those in place with local municipalities and other funding sources, revenue for the project more than doubled in 2015. Individual states will each have ownership over their portion of the Greenway, allowing for a unique feel to each section.
The trail will make it possible for riders to have a more interactive experience as they travel, exploring towns, picking up a bit of local history, or just stopping to enjoy the scenery. There will be access point linking the trail up with public transportation, as well as local points of interest.
The Greenway winds through woodlands and along waterways, with a series of paved pathways and bridges providing a smooth, safe ride. So far, about a third of the trail has been completed, with branching and complementary routes to be added in the future. The East Coast Greenway will pass through 25 cities in 16 states.
