Oregon’s Lost Lake Has a Leak

Along Central Oregon’s Highway 20 lies picturesque Lost Lake. Part of the year, that is. During the winter, the lake fills, then drains through a slightly mysterious hole, turning the lake into a meadow. This isn’t a new development and while it appears odd, it’s actually easily explained if you know a little bit of the geography of Oregon.

People who have been in the Pacific Northwest since May 18, 1980 are well aware that much of the area is volcanic. For those of you unfamiliar with the date, that’s when Mt. St. Helens blew its top.

As is common with volcanic areas, there are frequently lava tubes. With a lava tube, flowing lava hardens near the surface, but continues to flow inside the tube. This allows for a hard outside with an empty inside. The big mystery is knowing where the water is going, which is currently unconfirmed.
