When bottled water hit the scene in the late 1980s, health and fitness enthusiasts everywhere fell for the marketing ploy hook, line, and sinker: bottled water is healthier for you than tap water. The consumption of bottled water has exploded since then, creating a $22 billion dollar industry in the US alone. Claims of heightened purity and superior sources have made bottled water the booming business it is today, as freshwater sources increasingly dwindle all over the planet. The irony of all this goodwill for bottled water is the fact that producing bottled water expends an immense amount of resources, one of which is the very substance fueling the industry: water.
