While most people consider electrolyte drinks to be colorful sports drinks that are high in acidity, salt and sugar, you can make your own and have it be much healthier.  Drinks with electrolytes will help your body recover from losing vital moisture during the sweating process that occurs while working out.  They’ll keep your body balanced and replenished for extensive and demanding workouts.  By making your own electrolyte drink, you’ll be able to save plenty of money and consume fluids that area much healthier.

Foods like coconuts, oranges, bananas and honey have natural electrolytes.  You can use these foods along with other ingredients to make your own electrolyte drink that tastes amazing, replenishes your body and doesn’t fill you up with refined sweeteners, artificial sugars and a slew of chemicals that you can’t pronounce.  To make your own electrolyte drink, pick up oranges, strawberries, limes, lemons, organic honey, coconut water, water, salt and sugar.  Each fruit listed above has electrolytes that will help you recover from physical exercise, boost your stamina and satisfy your taste buds.

Combine these amounts of the above listed ingredients in a blender, pitcher, or thermos and stir/shake vigorously:

  • ¼ cup of lime juice
  • ¼ cup of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 liter of water
  • 1 whole squeezed orange
  • 2 cups of coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon of organic honey
  • 2 cups of strawberries

For the salt, you can use regular table salt if it has sodium chloride.  If it has potassium iodide, that is also considered to be a plus.  Fine grain salt is optimal as it dissolves faster than other types of salts.  Keep in mind that electrolytes are pretty much salts.  So don’t skip out on this ingredient thinking that it will make your drink healthier.

Water acts as the main carrier of electrolytes so try to use clean, high quality bottled water.  If you use water out of the faucet, boil it in a tea kettle first.  Distilled water is ideal as it has hardly any pollutants or contaminants so it is as close to pure water as possible.
