Watkins Glen, New York feature

By far the most beautiful of all New York’s Finger Lakes State Parks, Watkins Glen State Park boasts breathtaking scenery, modern campgrounds and a huge array of outdoor activities and other amenities that are sure to please. Considering all it has to offer, it’s no wonder that the park has been nominated as one of the best state parks in the entire country. This feat is made even more impressive considering that its total area is less than 1.5 square miles. Despite the size, visitors to Watkins Glen State Park can enjoy these and many other amazing activities.

The Gorge Trail

Undoubtedly the highlight of Watkins Glen State Park, the Gorge Trail extends for two miles along Glen Creek. Walking along the creek, visitors can get a sense of the area’s glacial past as they pass by 200-foot cliffs on either side.

The path gently winds its way past and underneath 19 different waterfalls as the creek descends over 400 vertical feet along the 2-mile stretch of trail. Spectacular stone bridges are scattered along the stunning Gorge Trail, including the scenic Rainbow Bridge.

Indian and Southern Rim Trails

While the Gorge Trail stays close to the stream, these other two trails take visitors along the woody edges of the gorge where they can gaze down into the stream from above. These rim trails are definitely not to be missed as they provide a unique perspective of the waterfalls and the surrounding area.

Camping and Swimming

Those who wish to spend a few days at the park can set up their tent or park their RV in one of the campgrounds. After a long day hiking along the gorge, the park’s Olympic-sized swimming pool provides a fantastic spot to relax and cool off.

Ample Fishing Opportunities

Anyone who enjoys a bit of fishing should definitely schedule their visit in time to catch the spring rainbow trout run in nearby Catharine Creek. As well, Glen Creek itself offers the opportunity to put your hook into some brown trout. Seneca Lake is also excellent for fishing and can be reached in only a few minutes by car or even on foot.

The entire Finger Lakes region of New York is home to stunning scenery and ample opportunities for outdoor adventures and excitement. However, few if any areas can really compare to the beauty and majesty of wonderful Watkins Glen State Park.
