Have you ever thought of kayaking…underground? Boasting one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, Coromandel in New Zealand offers breathtaking views from the water, and is also home to some of the longest sea caves in the world. This astounding natural feature has led to a worldwide following of people who are kayaking the sea caves of New Zealand.

Sea caves are formed by erosion, caused by the pounding of waves against seaside cliff faces. They occur the world over. Sea caves are found everywhere from Italy to Chile, and from Scotland to Hawaii. These naturally formed phenomena are ever changing as the water continues to wear away their rocky walls.

New Zealand is home to Matainaka Cave which, at a whopping 5,051 feet long, is the longest sea cave in the world. To put it in perspective, this is three times as long as the former world record holder, the 1,315 foot long Sea Lion Cave in Oregon. The Purple Cathedral, so named for the colorful algae inside the cave which becomes exposed at low tide, is not far from Matainaka. This one measures 1,325 feet long earning it the title of second longest sea cave.

As its sandstone walls continue to be pounded by the surrounding sea, coupled with the influx and out outflow of the tides, Matainaka is still growing. Accessible only from the water, kayakers can ride through this marvel, which features smooth walls and some tight restrictions.

Located in the north-central portion of New Zealand’s western coast, Coromandel also features rainforests and pristine beaches. You can even paddle along the coastline to the stunning Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, a popular snorkeling spot.
