Do you love the outdoors and spending time with some great kids? The NYC Chapter of Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings is welcoming all interested volunteers to join them at their annual Hike-A-Thon on October 20, 2012 for a day of hiking at Bear Mountain!
This is an event that will help fund outdoor recreational activities for NYC’s inner-city youth. You can actually participate in the event, or you can make a donation to support someone who is participating in the hike. Each hiker is asked to raise a minimum of $150 to participate, with a special prize being awarded to the hiker who raises the most money. Businesses can get involved as event sponsors as well, so be sure to include them in those you solicit for donations.
Participants who register online are asked to check in at the event between 10 – 11 AM. There will be onsite registration as well, which participants can walk up to between 10:30 – 11 AM. There will be a light breakfast station available, and each hiker will receive a bagged lunch courtesy of Red Rabbit, an NYC-based provider of locally produced, healthy meals to schools in the New York metro area.
Registered participants will be paired with a group Inner City Outings (ICO) students from one of six agencies in NYC. Official ICO Certified Leaders and volunteers will lead your group on the trek up Bear Mountain, and maps will be provided to each hiker at registration. The hike up and back down will take approximately 4 – 5 hours, with the starting time of groups staggered to prevent crowding on the trail.
Once all participants are registered, everyone will meet on the lawn for a few games, directions for the trail, and the opportunity to get to know your hiking partners. Once your group is cleared to begin the hike, all that’s left to do is enjoy yourself and the wonderful scenery of Bear Mountain State Park!
Please visit www.nycicohikeathon.org for registration and donation details. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to make a positive impact on NYC’s youth while taking in a great autumn day!
