For most of us, we learned early in life how to tie our shoes. One of the last skills our parents passed along before pushing us out of the nest, it may have been hurried in an attempt to broaden back to school shopping options beyond He-Man velcro shoes. So, let’s go over some quality tips on how to tie hiking boots!

Many people assume a not-broke/don’t-fix approach to tying their shoes, but what if there was a better way? A way that didn’t require a double knot? A way that didn’t result in tangled laces right when you’re trying to climb into your sleeping bag for the night? There is!

A simple way to see if you’re tying your shoes “wrong” is to look at the direction of the bow you create when tying your shoes. If it’s parallel to your shoe, it’s not the most efficient knot. It’s likely to come undone (unless you do the double knot) and is more prone to tangling when untying. If your bow is perpendicular to your boots, you’re all set and can go forth and teach this valuable skill to your fellow campmates.

This is a case where a video is worth a thousand words, so spend the next 3 minutes learning the best way to tie hiking boots!
